Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Randolph
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my creative career as copywriter and author. It wasn’t until I was working with my husband Dan, a photographer, on an illustrated book project that I caught the photography bug. I honed my skills and took classes, and within a very short period of time, I merged photography with mixed media and received a stunningly large project that resulted in 250+ commissioned works for a retirement community in Scottsdale, AZ.
From there, I applied and was juried into the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale, a spectacular annual show that runs daily for ten weeks. I credit the CFA with giving me what essentially amounts to a Ph.D in the art business. It was an unrivaled experience working side-by-side with 100 other seasoned artists of every medium. I am still represented by the CFA and work, as well, with other fine art galleries, such as Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design in Newport, RI, and art consultants and interior designers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have been exceptionally lucky with few obstacles but any professional artist will tell you that there are naturally slow periods of creativity. It is essential to take breaks so the mind is fresh and open to inspiration. We artists are not machines, and that is perhaps the biggest lesson that I have learned and like to pass on to others. We are layering our emotional life into our artwork, and it takes an incredible amount of energy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
First and foremost, I am an artist and designer. I work in several mediums, such as painting, jewelry, wall sculpture and photography. I love to learn new skills so that I can keep growing and pushing myself. This is what I am most proud of: my diversity and desire to learn. This keeps my work fresh and surprising. Primarily, my work is expressionistic, though I am currently working on an abstract collection.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I have just relocated to Greenville, SC from Newport, RI and am delighted by the large artistic community here in the Upstate and all over South Carolina. Being in a new place has really inspired me. Greenville is gorgeous! The more I see, the more I love it. This is reflected in my new art pieces, I’m sure. I’m currently painting a new body of abstract and minimalistic work in which I balance luminous gold-metal leaf with undercurrents of color and texture, simplicity and complexity. Gold leaf is so glamorous and almost recreates itself with every change of light. I find it very engaging, so stay tuned for more! I look forward to connecting with clients, designers and art consultants. I can be reached at:
