Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story has been shaped by change, curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to keep building and reinventing myself.
I was born and raised in Russia and moved to the United States as a young adult. Starting over in a new country was a major chapter in my life. I had to learn a new culture, become comfortable communicating in another language, meet people from completely different backgrounds, and ultimately build a life for myself from the ground up.
I’ve now lived in the Charleston area for many years, and I’ve loved watching the city grow and change. I especially enjoy the social and increasingly diverse side of Charleston — meeting people, attending events, discovering new places, and connecting with people from different cultures and backgrounds. I’ve always been fascinated by international culture and by the different ways people experience and see the world.
Professionally, I found my path in technology. Over the years, I’ve built a career as a software engineer, primarily working with .NET, C#, Angular, TypeScript, APIs, and enterprise applications. I have a very strong work ethic, and I genuinely enjoy working, being productive, solving problems, and seeing something I’ve worked on come to life.
I think one of the things that defines me most is that I love to build. In software, that means taking an idea or a problem and turning it into something real, but that mindset extends far beyond technology for me. I enjoy building projects, developing new skills, creating opportunities, connecting with people, and constantly thinking about what I could do next.
More recently, I became very interested in Generative AI. I completed a Microsoft Generative AI certification and began building my own AI projects, including an AI Document Intelligence Assistant using Python, FastAPI, and OpenAI. What has been especially exciting is realizing that learning AI doesn’t mean starting my engineering career over. Instead, I can take years of experience in software development and apply that foundation to an entirely new generation of technology.
At the same time, technology is only one part of who I am. I’m also a mother of two boys, and raising them while continuing to build my career and pursue my own goals has taught me a lot about discipline, resilience, responsibility, and what we are capable of when something truly matters to us.
Outside of work, I have always had a strong creative side. I love dance, fashion, photography, modeling, and travel. Dance in particular has become an important form of self-expression for me. I love performing, learning new styles, and the confidence and energy that come from being on a dance floor or on a stage.
I’m also naturally very social and curious about people. I love being around ambitious, driven, open-minded people who are passionate about what they do. I enjoy attending events, networking, exchanging ideas, and putting myself in environments where I can meet someone from a completely different industry, culture, or part of the world. Those interactions inspire me and often make me think bigger about my own life.
One thing that has remained consistent throughout my journey is that I’ve never been afraid to start again or learn something completely new. Moving countries taught me early that life can change dramatically and that you are capable of rebuilding, adapting, and becoming a new version of yourself more than once.
I believe strongly in continuous growth. I don’t think we have to define ourselves by one profession, one role, or one chapter of our lives. I can be a software engineer and a mother, be fascinated by AI and technology, love dancing and fashion, travel, meet new people, and continue discovering completely new sides of myself.
Today, I’m less interested in fitting into one category and more interested in building a life that feels interesting, meaningful, and authentic to me. I’m still exploring what all of these different pieces may eventually become, and I think that is one of the most exciting parts of my story — it’s still being written.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges for me is that my entire family lives outside of the United States, so I’ve had to learn how to handle a lot on my own while building my career, raising my two boys, and creating a life here.
Of course, there have been difficult moments along the way, both personally and professionally. But I’ve always been a very active and optimistic person, and I don’t allow myself to stay discouraged for very long. My natural response is to keep moving forward, stay positive, connect with people, and look for the next opportunity.
Over time, I’ve learned that challenges are simply part of life. I can’t control everything that happens, but I can control how I respond to it. I think that mindset has made me more independent, resilient, and confident in my ability to figure things out.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a software engineer with more than eight years of experience building web applications, APIs, and enterprise software. My background is primarily in .NET, C#, Angular, TypeScript, and SQL, and more recently I’ve been expanding into Generative AI, Python, and LLM-based applications.
What I enjoy most about engineering is the combination of logic and creativity. My work requires a lot of problem-solving, analytical thinking, and continuous learning. Technology changes incredibly quickly, especially with AI, so I’m constantly challenging myself to learn something new and understand where the industry is going next.
One thing that often surprises people about me is that I don’t necessarily fit their idea of what a software engineer looks like. When people first meet me, they sometimes assume I work in modeling, fashion, beauty, or another creative industry. They’re usually surprised when I tell them that I spend my days designing software, solving technical problems, working with complex systems, and writing code.
I actually love that contrast because I’ve never believed that intelligence, technology, beauty, creativity, and femininity have to exist in separate worlds.
Outside of engineering, I’m a dancer, I’m certified as a stretching coach, I love fashion and photography, and I’m interested in pursuing more opportunities in modeling. And, most importantly, I’m a mom of two boys.
What I’m most proud of isn’t one particular project or job title. It’s that I’ve continued building a demanding career while raising my children and still making room for the other things that make me feel like myself.
I think what sets me apart is exactly that combination. I don’t want to choose between being technical and creative, ambitious and feminine, a professional and a mother. I want to keep developing all of those sides of myself.
For me, success isn’t about fitting into one box. It’s about having the freedom and confidence to build a life that includes all the different things I love.
What are your plans for the future?
For the future, I see myself becoming more entrepreneurial and eventually building something of my own. I’m especially interested in finding ways to combine my background in software engineering and AI with the creative industries I naturally enjoy — beauty, fashion, content creation, and social media.
I would love to use technology and AI to help people and businesses strengthen their online presence, create better digital experiences, and grow their brands. I don’t know exactly what form that will take yet, and I actually find that exciting. I want to keep experimenting, building, meeting people, and seeing where those different worlds can connect.
I also want to pursue modeling more seriously. I love photography and being in front of the camera, and I’m especially interested in lifestyle, beauty, fashion, fitness, and family modeling. I think there is something unique about being able to represent both sides of myself — a software engineer working with technology and AI, and at the same time a woman who loves fashion, beauty, creativity, and modeling.
Health and an active lifestyle are also a big part of my life. I dance, play tennis, work on flexibility and stretching, and genuinely enjoy staying active. I would love for that side of my personality to become part of the opportunities I pursue as well.
Ultimately, I don’t see my future as choosing one career and staying inside that box. I see myself creating something that brings together technology, entrepreneurship, creativity, modeling, and lifestyle in a way that feels authentic to me.
Maybe one day “software engineer turned tech entrepreneur and model” will be the simplest way to describe it. For now, I’m enjoying building toward it.
