Check Out Ben Moorhead’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Moorhead

Hi Ben, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised right here in Oconee County SC. Growing up on a cattle farm in South Carolina taught me work ethic and the importance of family. I joined the military in 2002 as an enlisted Soldier and gained my commission in 2008 with the SC Army National Guard. After clearing a tree from a roof following a big storm in 2023, I fell and shattered my L-1 vertebrae. Following my surgery I was stuck at home recovering and began playing around on Instagram under the name @Major_Dad_SC. I found a community of parents who struggle with all the things we also struggle with as a homeschool family with multiple kids at home and one in college now. I have always enjoyed making people laugh and IG has given me a community of people who have a lot of the same highs and lows of parenthood.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been an easy road to build an Instagram following. I have asked a lot of questions to other people who have been successful and learned from trial and error. I have always been a firm believer in the worst that can happen is someone can tell you no, so ask away! Following my accident and back surgery, I had a long road of recovery ahead of me in the military and my daily life. Social media creation helped take my mind off the pain and keep laughing through my recovery even though at times it was incredibly difficult.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an Air Defense Officer with the SC Army National Guard full-time and also a part time professor at our local technical college for business students. Many military officers I believe are afraid to post to social media due to how it will be perceived from others. I typically try to avoid military/political topics in my social media and stick to parenthood and the relatable struggles we all face.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I do believe in taking risks. It was a risk getting married and having kids young. It was a risk joining the military at a young age right after 9/11, when I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life/career. I believe that due to my faith in God, I always knew He had a plan for my life and my family. It may not be easy and it may not be according to my timing, but He has always taken care of me and my family.
