Check Out Audrika Gadson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrika Gadson.

Hi Audrika, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in the decorations business started in a very simple and meaningful way. While working at a local community center in Sumter, I began doing balloon decorations for senior citizens. It was something small, but it sparked a passion in me that I didn’t even realize was there at the time.
From there, I started working with a young lady in Sumter who was already doing event décor. I helped primarily with balloons, learning as much as I could along the way. Eventually, I began doing balloon work for different event planners throughout the area, continuing to build my skills and confidence.
The turning point for me came when I started traveling to Columbia to work with an event designer. My mom and I would go almost every weekend, just doing balloons and helping where needed. At the time, I didn’t fully see my potential—but she did. She encouraged me, guided me, and showed me what was possible. One day, she was overbooked and asked if I would be willing to take on a decorating job in Camden. After that, she continued to push me to start doing my own events and even showed me where to order supplies.
Even with all of that encouragement, I still saw it as just a hobby.
But everything changed after I lost my mom in 2019. That moment shifted my mindset completely. I knew I wanted to turn this into a real business—not just for myself, but to make her proud. Decorations became more than just work for me; it became a way for me to cope, to heal, and to pour my heart into something meaningful.
After that, my family stepped in—my dad, my nieces and nephew, my aunts, friends, and siblings—and they all helped mold my business into what it is today. Their support, along with my mom’s early belief in me, is the foundation of everything I’ve built.
I started with just one shed in my yard, slowly building my inventory piece by piece. Today, I’ve grown into multiple storage units and a storefront, offering full décor services beyond just balloons.
This journey has been personal, emotional, and purpose-driven. It’s more than a business to me—it’s a part of who I am. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
If you want, I can also create a shorter version for social media or a bio—this one is great for interviews or features.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I faced was losing my mom. That was a very difficult time for me personally, and at the same time, I was trying to figure out how to grow a business. Turning my pain into purpose wasn’t easy, but it became part of my motivation.
On the business side, I had to learn a lot through trial and error. Figuring out which clients to book and understanding that every opportunity isn’t meant for me was a big lesson. In the beginning, I wanted to say yes to everything, but I learned that not every client aligns with my vision or my business.
Another challenge was learning what to invest in—what to add to my inventory, what was actually needed, and when to make those purchases. It’s easy to spend money in this industry, especially trying to keep up with trends, but I had to learn how to be strategic instead of just buying everything I saw.
Keeping up with trends itself was also a struggle. The event industry is always evolving, and I had to teach myself how to stay current while still creating my own style and not losing what makes my brand unique.
Overall, the journey has come with a lot of lessons, but every challenge helped shape me, not just as a business owner, but as a person.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in event décor, creating customized experiences for my clients that go beyond just decorations. I started with balloons, but now I offer full décor services including live floral centerpieces, elegant setups, and detailed event styling.
One thing that really sets me apart is that I incorporate live flowers into my events, which adds a higher-end, more luxurious feel. I also have a professional photographer on my team, which allows my clients to not only have a beautiful event, but also capture those moments with high-quality photos. That combination of design and documentation makes the experience even more special.
Over time, I’ve worked hard to find my own style. I don’t just follow trends—I take inspiration and make it my own so that each event has a unique and personal touch.
What I’m most proud of is my growth—not just in my business, but in myself. I’ve come a long way from where I started, and I’m grateful for the journey. I’m also incredibly proud of the support system I have. My family and friends have played a huge role in helping me build and grow, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
What truly sets me apart is not just what I create, but the heart behind it. Every event I design is personal, intentional, and a reflection of my passion.
