Today we’d like to introduce you to Assata Amani.
Hi Assata, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a photographer in Fayetteville, NC. That turned into meeting a lot of great people and taught me what it meant to be a service to my community. I simultaneously picked up a microphone while in undergrad college at Methodist University and it changed my life. I no longer felt afraid of the lime light. I no longer hid behind my anxiety. Although I stopped photography, it showed me the differing aspects of art. It taught me what smoke and mirrors were and how important the people behind the scenes are.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been far from a smooth road for me. Learning to navigate my journey in art, my mental health, and motherhood- I learned that the best things for me look different than it does for most people. Some of the struggles just makes me unique and it gives depth to who I am as a person.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician and content creator for various brands. I specialize in song-writing as well as editing. I am most proud of my song-writing capabilities because there was a time when I couldn’t write a verse. I just lacked confidence and vulnerability. That turned into me going to therapy and starting to learn how to navigate my stressors. Yet, my ability to create has been in me since a little girl. For that I am grateful.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Take the risks! How will you learn. The only thing that could happen is that you learn either the good or the bad behind your actions. The biggest risk I took was putting myself out there for my art and creations. That takes a lot of confidence and a lot of security within self.
