Inspiring Conversations with Malone Taylor of Pinewood Design and Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malone Taylor.

Malone Taylor

Hi Malone, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story? How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in South Georgia on a 3000-acre quail hunting plantation, so from an early age, my dad instilled in me a love of the outdoors. Being a true Southern woman, my mom taught me the importance of Southern hospitality and the concept of what home is. Growing up, I learned that home is a place you share with loved ones. It’s a space to celebrate your victories and a comfort to revert to in hard times. Home is a space that allows you to gather with your favorite people and make memories and traditions that will last a lifetime. Because of my mother’s influence and other women, I grew to love interior design and learning how to make a house a home. I attended Auburn University and studied Interior Design, where my love for finding a way to make spaces both functional and beautiful flourished. I learned that I could incorporate my love for nature into my designs by using neutral colors and natural textures in a layered way to create a dynamic and visually exciting space. My foundation in Southern hospitality allows me to serve my clients in all the best ways and treat them like family throughout the lifespan of their project. Upon graduating college, I got a job working for a designer in Alabama, where I continued to learn from her wisdom and skill set and further perfect my skills. In March of 2023, I decided to open my interior design firm to provide people with functional and beautiful spaces they could enjoy with their families for years. My design firm, Pinewood Design and Company, is a full-service interior design firm that provides services for projects of any scale. Whether you are renovating, building from scratch, or just refreshing an existing space, I am happy to help!

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Thankfully, I have an amazing support system that helped me start my own business and gave me advice when needed. The most difficult part of my journey has been establishing my business in South Carolina. My business was originally founded in Alabama, but my husband and I recently moved to Charleston. I have found that changing cities and leaving behind my established clientele in Alabama has proven difficult. Breaking into the Charleston market and establishing myself as a designer will take time and patience, so I am learning to navigate my new environment and hopefully get my business rolling here very soon!

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pinewood Design and Company?
Pinewood Design and Company is a full-service residential interior design firm that provides services for any project. We can help clients select simple components like paint colors and furniture. Still, we also provide more in-depth services like drawing custom closets and cabinetry and specifying flooring, tile, counter material, and exterior finishes. We also assist with schematic design and space planning. We love to find problems in a floor plan and make changes to ensure that the home is as functional as possible before it is built. I am most proud that we are known for our hospitality and being able to listen to a client and provide them with what they want and need in their space. At Pinewood Design and Company, we accommodate any desired design style. We also work directly with builders and contractors so that the client has the easiest building/renovating process possible.

How do you think about luck?
It isn’t so much luck as it is God has blessed me with some of the best family and friends who have supported my small business, whether handing out business cards and giving referrals on my behalf or sharing my social media posts on Instagram and Facebook. I have also been blessed with amazing clients who have graciously trusted me with their homes and spaces.
