Check Out Georgia Schrubbe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Schrubbe.

Georgia Schrubbe

Hi Georgia, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story? How did you get to where you are today?
I am a lifelong dancer, and dance has shaped my entire life. As a young child, I saw a ballet performance in my hometown of Fairhope, Alabama. The performance entranced me so much that I wouldn’t even get to the bathroom. Shortly after that incident, my parents enrolled me in dance classes. In college, I fell in love with Latin dance and music. That love (some might call it an obsession) snowballed into me studying abroad, working in Cuba, and chasing my passion for Latin dance all around the country. I started teaching Salsa in 2013, which developed into starting my own business, having a studio, and organizing events. Dance is a vehicle for living and being your best life. I have seen many people blossom into happier, healthier, more passionate versions of themselves from dancing. My purpose is to bring people together, and dance is one of the best ways I’ve found to do that– no matter what language you speak or where you’re from, you can find common ground on the dance floor.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been relatively smooth so far?
It’s been interesting! The biggest struggles for me have been internal. Staying motivated and inspiring, setting and maintaining healthy boundaries, and overcoming imposter syndrome are a few! There have been a lot of times when I’ve wanted to quit for various reasons, and sometimes, I have to take a step back or let some things go until I regain motivation.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My business, Holy City Salsa Dance Studio, shares the joy of movement, music, and community through dance. Adults of all ages and skill levels tap into the life-changing magic of dance through our group classes and events. We primarily teach salsa and bachata, social dances in Latin America and the Caribbean. Besides teaching the steps, our classes emphasize the importance of connection. People get to make friends, form bonds with people they would have never met, and tap into a vibrant community. I’m proud of how many people come through our doors never having danced before and end up with newfound confidence, a new social circle, and a new sense of excitement and purpose from dance.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
How many stress dreams do I have about the music not working in my classes or events? It’s at least once a week. There has only been one or two times in 14 years of teaching dance that the music has malfunctioned, but it remains a bugaboo in my psyche.
