Today we’d like to introduce you to Van Nguyen.
Hi Van, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to becoming interested in the beauty industry started at 5 years old. It all started with makeup. I spent countless hours growing up learning from gurus online and would imagine myself to one day be in this industry. Lucky for me, while I was in high school, I had the opportunity to attend a vocational school. I immediately knew I wanted to enter into Cosmetology. That was the most logical decision since it concerned everything beauty-related! Within Cosmetology, I could dive into different fields of the beauty industry, such as hair, skin, and nails. I soon realized I wasn’t interested in becoming a makeup artist, so I tried the other fields instead. Hairdressing fell through quickly, but then I finally stuck with nails. I became obsessed with anything nail-related: nail art, nail product knowledge; you name it! I loved spending my free time studying new techniques and gaining more knowledge. Even to this day, I am constantly learning and evolving with trends and improving my art skills.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has been a challenging road for me. Many life-related obstacles caused me to second-guess my love for this career. Whether it be the pandemic, financial issues, or anything else I went through. All things truly prepared me and tested my dedication to this. I felt completely and utterly lost when I first entered the nail industry. I couldn’t stop comparing myself to the other amazing nail artists I saw. My biggest struggle to this day is still my self-criticism, however, I can also use that to my advantage. My love of learning pairs well with my constant desire to improve, so I am learning to turn my criticism into a positive thing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a nail technician. I specialize in making people feel beautiful and well-groomed by improving their nail appearance and health. I’m known for my attention to detail and creativity when collaborating with my clients to achieve the exact look they envision. My passion for my work and desire to change the narrative of being a nail tech set me apart from others. I want to break down stereotypes and show that doing nails and creating nail art is just as much of an art form as other mediums.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about Greenville is that you can drive pretty close to get anywhere. We are in the middle of everything. Whether you’re in the mood to shop, go biking, try different restaurants, etc., you can always find something. Don’t even get me started on all Greenville coffee shops! There are so many hidden gems waiting to be found.
