Daily Inspiration: Meet Katelyn Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Curry.

Katelyn Curry

Hi Katelyn. Can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The story of Recovery Day began with Joel on his own. When we met in school at UofSC at 20 and 21, he told me about his far-off dream of starting his own recovery business for friends and family. Joel continued to discuss this plan with me as we progressed through the athletic training field within our careers. Finally, after working from professional athletics to middle school, we decided to leap of faith and open our place. Joel runs Recovery Day full-time, and I work as I can while also working another full-time job, and it has been a blessing. We can reach various people in the Upstate, and we have quite a few clients who will drive a few hours a couple of times a month to have us treat them.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not. When we started, we were incredibly worried that no one would know what an athletic trainer is. Turns out, we were correct. Our main focus, alongside providing great care for clients, has been to bring awareness to the field and what we, as athletic trainers, can do with our training!

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
Joel and I are both athletic trainers by trade, and we each have a particular style of treatment that works well together, fortunately. He is extremely good with manual work, using his hands, and I am better with modalities. We can decrease pain and inflammation, increase range of motion, and more within our business. We offer various services, including cupping, dry needling, E-stim, infrared sauna, and normal boots, to name a few. We are most proud of offering affordable holistic services that decrease pain in our clients. We have had one client who has had a back fusion and discussed that he wished we were open before he’d done that because this was the most relief he’s ever gotten.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
Absolutely. Joel and I continued to work throughout the COVID-19 crisis in our main roles at ATCs, and while we were focused on cleanliness before this illness, it enhanced significantly after the fact. At Recovery Day, we also offer one-on-one sessions for our clients so they don’t have to worry about interacting with others who may have an illness. This setting gives us time to have conversations with our clients and get to know them as we work to help them. Plus, we clean immensely in between every client, so no worries about that!
