Check Out Ebony Cox’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Cox.

Ebony Cox

Hi Ebony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I attended Ridge View High School in Columbia, South Carolina, where I participated in Musical Theatre and worked alongside my teacher, Ms. Willmer, where I gained knowledge in Sfx (Special Effect makeup). I started a Special Effect club where I taught ten to twenty students how to apply prosthetics and create cool effects on the skin. My work was so horrific they took my posters down from the school because they looked so realistic! My visions and creativity took a huge turn after high school, where I got to showcase my talents even more in college. I attended South Carolina State University, where I received my Bachelor of Art in Professional Theatre; at South Carolina State University, I created props for shows, made costumes, Created Special Effects and Beauty Makeup on cast and crews, and built stage sets. I also taught my peers at South Carolina State University about Special Effect Makeup, which had a class of ten students. After college, I worked for Colonial Life Arena as a Stagehand crew member for the show “Millennial Tour” The year 2016 through 2022 Is when I started to see my work in the movies “The Wendigo” and “Rise of the Dead” fashion runway shows and everyday makeup events. I returned to school, where I received my Certification in Sfx and Skincare, which also helped me along my journey! Now, I am a Beauty representative assisting customers in finding their perfect match in makeup, showing them how to apply and remove makeup from their skin, and helping them with their skincare concerns.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a Makeup Artist, I trip over obstacles and challenges, such as not having a lot of support; I often find myself helping others rise to the top by speaking highly of their work and constantly posting while it’s the opposite of my side. Another area for improvement is finding clientele; only a few people are willing to pay a good and knowledgeable Makeup Artist to do service, and finding an affordable place to have my service that’s willing to work with my budget. Lastly, I can’t stress this enough: respecting myself and my work. All makeup artists are not the same! Which means we have different visions and styles.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Professional Theatre, But I am known for Special Effects Makeup, Beauty Makeup, and Skincare Specialist. I am very proud of myself, my achievements, and my work of art. Creativity sets me apart from other makeup artists; I like to think outside the box when creating looks! And I dare to be different. Also, I love to expand my knowledge of my profession, and I’m very detailed and organized with my crafts. I don’t like to make mistakes, and I like to call myself a perfectionist. Lastly, I care a lot about my clients! I remember faces and like to check on my clients once in a blue moon and, listen to any concerns about their daily life and give them advice.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love to listen to affirmation videos; these videos help train the mind to be positive and calm you down from everyday stressors. I love to take the time to listen to upbeat music to get my creative mind flowing and to go outside and breathe in the good air while thinking about all the accomplishments I made and meditating on the future.
