Today we’d like to introduce you to Tisha Henderson Adams.
Hi Tisha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started volunteering at Bright Blessings in 2011 after volunteering there through my church. I fell in love with the organization and all they do for our community’s homeless and impoverished children. After volunteering for about a year, I was asked if I wanted a part-time position with Bright Blessings. It was around 8 hours a week! I continued to work in other positions within the organization over the years. In the Fall of 2018, I was asked to take the position of Executive Director after our founder decided to step down from the organization. It was certainly big shoes to fill. I have loved every day that I have worked at Bright Blessings! Being able to come in every day and do something to bless children is a feeling I never want to lose. Seeing so many amazing volunteers who come in and serve with us every week is inspiring. Without them, we would not be able to bless all the children we do every year.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While my job at Bright Blessings is rewarding, it has challenges. Anyone who has worked in the non-profit sector knows it’s a balance of rewarding work but also challenging because of the stories you hear daily and the struggle of wanting to help more children but knowing that you have to have the funds to grow. I would love to be able to say yes to every request and grow to areas that desperately want our help, but the reality is that we have to have funds to be able to do that. Many people need to realize that non-profits are completely dependent on donations. Not only for our programs, but we must have the funds for rent, electricity, staff, and all the other overhead costs. It can be daunting and stressful to constantly look at finances and worry about providing programs, paying staff, and having a building to do it in.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Bright Blessings?
What’s next?
Our plans for the future are to continue blessing the children in our community as we have since 2005 and continue to grow to more counties and potentially to more states. We want to expand our services further into Cabarrus County and Gaston County. We would like to open a satellite office in Gaston County to reach those children better. We would love to bring the smiles our programs provide to as many children and moms as possible!
