Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Grommer.
Hi Ashley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My first permanent jewelry experience was at a rehearsal dinner in New Jersey. I’ve heard about it before from friends and family doing it and have always wanted one. When I saw that someone was there, I immediately got excited and got one. After the weekend, I couldn’t stop thinking about how fun it would be to start a business. Thinking about my excitement when getting my bracelet, I could only imagine other people felt the same way. I wanted to make others feel special. It was hard at first to figure out where to begin. Even though it’s been around for a few years, I couldn’t figure out the first steps. My husband suggested I contact the person who did my permanent bracelet in Jersey. I wasn’t expecting a response back, but I was wrong. Shaina welcomed me with open arms and led me toward where to begin. With FaceTime calls and messaging back and forth, Shaina mentioned a Permanent Jewelry Expo in Vegas. We both went and learned a lot from practicing and the classes we took. After that, I felt like I was finally ready to start. I’m now taking private event parties or pop-ups at shops.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not! It takes work to start a business on your own. I am building from the ground up and learning new things every day. With how the world uses social media these days, that’s the hardest part. Finding the right following and making your profile attractive and different from others is hard.
We’ve been impressed with Bespoke Permanent Jewelry, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Some people may need to learn Permanent Jewelry, but it’s pretty simple. Instead of having a clasp to take your bracelet or necklace on and off, I have a small welding machine that welds the two ends of the chain together by a jump ring. This doesn’t allow you to take it off; you’ll have it on forever if you need to for medical reasons like an MRI or just because you can do it with a pair or scissors. I recommend cutting it off at the jump ring instead of the actual chain so I can weld it back on for you when ready. Why get permanent jewelry? It’s not just a piece of jewelry; it’s the experience. Where are you when you are getting one done, and who are you with? Are you hosting a baby shower for your sister? Are you a Maid of Honor at your best friend’s wedding? It’s the memories and the unique experience you add to whatever special day you planned. Not on do I do bracelets and necklaces, but rings and anklets have become popular. I also have charms that you can add to your bracelet as well.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from growing up.
Growing up in Myrtle Beach, there are a lot of beachwear stores. We had a family friend who worked at one, and I remember going there a lot. I would go straight to the clothes and jewelry, picking things I liked 1 by 1 and trying everything on. I loved to pick out my style and wear whatever I wanted.
