Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Wolfe.
Hi Josie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been interested in fashion, and as a plus-size woman, it was so rare to see other plus-size bodies sharing their lives on the internet. I decided to post try-on hauls, fitting room videos, and anything related to the plus-size fashion world. I started on Tiktok with the videos and on Instagram, posting various outfits. I have now begun to transform more into fashion + lifestyle content, posting about my day-to-day life with fashion sprinkled in. I now consider myself a micro-influencer and collaborate with brands passionate about creating space for plus-size bodies. I am continuing to work towards making social media my full-time career.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been easy to post myself online. With anyone on social media, there is always a risk of internet bullies, but it can be challenging in the plus-size world. If a video performs well, you’re guaranteed to have comments like “Take everything back,” “You look awful,” “You’re way too big to be wearing things like that,” etc. Those comments can take a toll, but the positive comments and the number of people who have said, “Finally, someone with my exact body posting things like this” makes all the difference to me. There will always be people who don’t believe fat bodies deserve a space in this world, but I’ll continue to step up and go against that awful standard.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a micro-influencer on Tiktok and Instagram. My Tiktok has gained 10,000 followers and continues to grow. There are two things I love best about what I do. First, I have made so many relationships with friends online who have become a massive part of my world. Creating a sense of community for plus-size bodies and having my platform to do that is amazing. Secondly, I love to work with brands who want plus-size bodies to be included in their name. There is still a long way to go in the industry with the inclusion of plus size clothing, accessories, etc., but the brands taking that initiative and choosing to have my face represent their brand have been incredible to work with. I’m most proud of my resilience. As I spoke about, creating content with my apple-shaped body hasn’t always been easy, and I’m subject to hate, but what sets me apart is my ability to look past that and continue showing up for the connections I’ve built that are looking at me to be there and break the stigma.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I want to stress the importance of being kind. Plus size, fat, bigger bodies, whatever word you want to describe us, is simply that, a word. We are still humans. Our weight does not define our entire lives. Many plus-size individuals live wonderful, happy, healthy, and successful lives. Fat people deserve the same space given to the world’s “standard” sizes. We deserve to feel loved, valued, important, and cherished. If you’re plus size and reading this, know I see you. I will continue to break the barrier and prove to the world we are here and we aren’t going anywhere. 🤍
