Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Grayson.
Hi Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hair has always been a part of me. My mom could not do hair but vowed to have me in somebody’s salon. In 2011, I started cosmetology school but shortly had to stop due to pregnancy with my son Peyton. I finally returned, and in 2013, I graduated from Virginia College of Cosmetology. Excited about graduating, I began looking for a salon home. I knew I didn’t want to work at a commission-based salon. The idea of me doing the work and having to pay the commission fee didn’t sit right with me. A year later, I finally thought I had found a salon home. I get pregnant with my daughter, Paisley. So I had to start working back from home. Once I had my daughter, I returned to the salon I previously worked at. A few months later, that salon decided to go commission based. I already knew commission base wasn’t for me. So, I started looking for salon suites and came across Salons by JC. I partnered with a stylist and rented a suite.
I made a good decision by moving into a salon suite covid hit! Due to covid restrictions, cosmetologists couldn’t work for 3 months. At that time, I started selling wigs at home to bring in extra income. Seeing the turnout of the wigs. I wanted to expand my business. Once the three-month restrictions were up, my partner and I separated. I decided to renew my contract at Salons by JC. Being in the house for so long, I missed interacting with different salon business owners. I loved it so much that I started looking for my suite-based salon. In 2022, I opened J.Grays Hair Studio.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest impact that challenged me was Covid being on a 3-month hiatus, learning the restrictions, and dealing with the fact that my primary source of income was gone.
