Conversations with Orlando McGill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Orlando McGill.

Hi Orlando, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hi. I’m Orlando and I am the owner of Sniper Productions. Photography has always been my passion. However, I started pursuing photography one hundred percent during the pandemic in 2020. While working a nine-to-five job, I began taking photos of friends willing to pose for me while I learned to use my equipment. As I improved, I transitioned into taking photos in and out of the studios doing birthday shoots, maternity shoots, grad shoots, outdoor shoots, and content shoots for friends and others who were recommended. As I ventured deeper into photography, I stumbled upon many who have helped me on the way, which produced my unbreakable bond with my current mentors and peers. These people have pushed me to develop my craft and to reach milestones that would not have been obtainable without them. I am still working full time but freelance in all of my free time to continue to develop my photography business to one day own my studio.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a challenging road. Having people trust you to produce for their special day or event would be at the top of the list. Working full-time doesn’t allow me to work on my passion as much as I like, but it helps ensure I can improve my craft. Branding has also been a continual challenge I have experienced throughout this journey. I’ve learned future clients are more inclined to book when they can see how passionate you are through social media and other platforms. Lastly, I am my biggest critic. I have always been hard on myself. I believe there are always ways to better myself, whether a new piece of equipment, learning a better angle to capture a vision or a more efficient way to shoot to create better quality.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an individual that captures special moments in time. I don’t just specialize in one style of photography. I want to capture moments people will never forget, whether when an individual is getting through a tough time or an individual’s best day of their life. I’m proud of the journey! I can look back and see how far I had come when I started. I look back at the pictures I had taken when I first started and see my improvement, which alone gives me the best joy in what I do every day. My creative eye, ability to work well with others, and enthusiasm to improve my craft set me apart.

How do you define success?
I define success as winning the little battles in photography and life in general. Success is not only about me but the people who I impact on a day-to-day basis.
