Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Rattacasa.
Hi Joe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2017 I started a dog training company and was looking for a way to make a supplemental income. I responded to an ad online for a part-time position as a mover, and Rick and I hit it off and have had a great relationship since then. Since then, Hauling Hubbies & Handymen has grown and changed in many ways.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In my experience, nothing is ever a smooth road. There have been many moves and various situations over the years that have been challenging mentally, physically, and emotionally. Several times early on, Rick and I have spread ourselves a little thin and worked until 3 am. As bad as that sounds, we would have to find the mental fortitude to get back to it at 8 am, after only a brief nap. We have had to invest in the company along the way, and some investments were better than others. Some lessons you have to learn the hard way but learn is what we did.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I am a manager, but that role is expansive as we continue to grow. Daily, I communicate with our crews and customers, equipping our crew, supplementing our labor if needed, and participating in the logistics planning of upcoming projects. I also am in charge of Hauling Hubbies & Handymen’s online presence. As a company, we pride ourselves on customer service and immense care for our customer’s belongings. So often, we are called to unload a truck packed by a different moving company, and furniture is damaged because it is unprotected. Boxes are collapsing, the liquid is spilling, blades from lawn equipment are exposed, and an overall lack of care is apparent everywhere you look. We pride ourselves in the proper technique to preserve the corners of walls, the stain on dinette sets, and the shine on the hardwood floors. Everyone knows the moving day is stressful, so we try to make it as easy on our customers as possible. We call to let them know when we’re on the way. Furniture gets wrapped in protective blankets. Fragile artworks get wrapped and surrounded by cushioning in the truck. Imagine paying a moving service $1000, and your favorite piece of art gets damaged. We do everything we can to make sure nothing like that happens.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The moving industry will likely always be an expansive one. A little ebb and flow are expected, especially as the Real Estate market fluctuates. But the bottom line is that movers will always be in demand because it is very physical work, which is only for some. It’s a specialized service that needs to be noticed more. The moving industry is similar to offensive linemen in football. It’s not a flashy position; the technique is everything, and if you go for the cheapest option, you can do way more harm than good.
