Today we’d like to introduce you to David and Angie McDuffie.
Hi David and Angie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
As new residents to Belton, we were excited to be here in this quaint small town. We looked around the area and wanted to start a business, as Belton has little to do. We asked the mayor at the time what she thought Belton would love, and her response was “ a coffee shop.” Being in the middle of Covid was difficult, and everyone around us was leaving the business. We thought, “are we crazy starting a business now?” But we wanted to bring a new and exciting concept to Belton. We began looking at places and met the nicest people. Richard and Eleanor Dorn (who is now the mayor) offered their place to rent. They agreed to do the flooring, painting, electrical, and plumbing, and we would do the rest. We are so completely thankful to them. They began working on everything immediately, and due to being right in the pandemic, it took a while for them to do everything. The place was completely run down and needed a complete makeover. Once they were done, we built everything inside the counters, the equipment, the decor, everything. We were so excited to open the doors in March of 2022 finally. It took us two years, but we finally did it! We can’t believe we are coming close to our year anniversary. This has been such a great year for everyone. Belton shows us every day how thankful they are that we are here. We appreciate our customers and everyone who has supported us throughout the year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles we had were dealing with COVID and construction.
As you know, we’re big fans of On the Grind Cafe. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
We are family-owned and specialize in specialty coffee, fresh pastries, fresh waffles with fruit, egg sandwiches, paninis, and soup! We make everything with love, and we are super proud of our coffee and making each one special for our customers. We always treat our customers how we would want to be treated. You’ll be greeted when you walk in and should feel right at home! We also offer a coffee bar for events! We bring the coffee to you for your special events. This is a service we just started providing to everyone, and we are so happy to be able to do this!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
To be patient, LOL. We needed to be patient and wait for things to be completed.
