Today we’d like to introduce you to Deb Foreman.
Hi Deb, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband and I are the parents of a transgender person. Our son’s story and experiences led me to co-found a non-profit named the Uplift Outreach Center, a safe space for lgbtq+ youth. Uplift offers programs to educate our youth regarding suicide prevention; programming is designed to be fun, build self-esteem, self-confidence, etc. Uplift opened in August of 2019, and closed six months later due to Covid19, so we provided virtual support and programming for 2 years until we began meeting in person again in March of 2022.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is generally a smooth road, but balancing Uplift’s and my personal and family needs is often challenging.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m probably best known as a local ally and activist for the lgbtq+ community, being on the PFLAG Spartanburg board of directors and cofounder of the Uplift Outreach Center. My title is Executive Director, but I’ve retained a volunteer status since we opened in 2019.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
What’s worked well is a collaboration with community members and individuals that have the same passion for this cause.
