Rising Stars: Meet Devon Knight of Greenville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Knight.

Hi Devon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been into photography since childhood – probably around middle school! You could often find me with my 35mm Samsung film camera stuffed in my backpack before pulling it out and snapping pictures of my friends at school. As an adult, I started photography to document my family (specifically my son) during special occasions, especially at my son’s baseball games/tournaments. I soon became the classic “photographer mom” who took pictures during tournaments and distributed pictures to the families after games so they could have memories of their kids playing baseball as well! Once I was asked to take team pictures, I knew I would need to use software to edit to make them look professional, and that’s when I got into the more creative side of photography. I discovered there was so much more to photography than pointing and clicking, and there could be an emotional and creative side I never knew was possible.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our area has so many talented photographers; it can be hard to put yourself out there. Once you stop comparing yourself to others, stay true to your style, and find a niche you are happy with, success tends to follow. It has been challenging. I’ve invested a lot of time and money into educating myself, and that’s all anyone can do to be successful. No one ever tells you the business side of photography is as difficult as it is. That would be the most challenging part for someone not from a business background. Marketing yourself and trying to be seen has been extra challenging in this saturated market.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer specializing in families, seniors, and couples. What I’m most known for are my family sessions. I’m especially proud of how quickly I’ve grown over the last year. From someone just starting in the photography field with little to no experience, I’m proud of how my art has progressed over the year. There are so many talented photographers in our area! The primary difference from other photographers in our area would be based on my editing and shooting style. I want my clients to have fun during their photoshoots and capture memories of that moment and time. With that said, I take a photojournalistic approach to my photoshoots which makes families more comfortable, and they can have fun instead of dreading their family photos.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I started my business after the pandemic and restrictions had eased.
