Check Out Sarah Glenn Boman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Glenn Boman.

Hi Sarah Glenn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from the College of Charleston in 2009, amid the recession, I did not know what I wanted to do for work. My goal at that time was to be employed. From then on, my career path was mostly exploratory. I was all over the map working in retail, HR, hospitality, and admin roles until I finally was able to see what was right in front of me and had been all along – a passion for interiors.

My passion for design and art started early. Through family travel, I was regularly exposed to new spaces, inspiring culture, and lots of artwork; many a weekend during childhood was spent at museums, art galleries, folk art festivals, and antique markets. Unbeknownst to me at the time, my creative eye for interiors was already developing through these special experiences. I was fortunate to become a homeowner at a young age. This, coupled with managing a rental property business, allowed me to explore and develop my passion for interior informally. Without a plan to pursue interior decorating as a career path, I continued to travel and pick up treasures to add to my home.

In 2012, I moved to New York. During my time in New York, I worked as the executive assistant for a high-profile celebrity chef with several restaurants. During this time, I realized interior design was what truly excited me. Participating in creating a restaurant as it evolves from concept ideation to opening day shifted my perspective on design. I am attracted to the intentional nature of the selection process – how every decision is important to make a space feel and function just right. In 2015, I transitioned from working for the chef to assisting the design team at the now-shuttered Brooklyn-based hospitality design firm Hecho Inc. At Hecho, I developed my understanding of design and honed my sourcing and client management skills. My time at Hecho was invaluable, and I am where I am today with that experience.

A few years later, after moving to Atlanta with my husband, I spent much of my spare time decorating our home and advising friends and family on their homes. After assessing the amount of time and energy spent on these side projects, I decided to turn this passion hobby into a full-scale business. I started small, doing one-off rooms in clients’ homes (a living room, a nursery, etc.), and the business has grown into full-scale home renovation projects. Thus, Sarah Glenn Interiors was born in early 2019.

I am most excited about a large project, The Lady Heléne, that I recently completed in Charleston! I had the pleasure of working on it with Cameron Glaws of Old City Builders (an old friend from CofC) and Rebeccah Rumph (an old colleague from Hecho). This was the perfect full-circle project where all my worlds collided! The building itself has a rich history dating back to the 1860s. Old City Builders did an impeccable job restoring the structure. Rebeccah and I had a blast designing all the home’s interiors, which have been divided into three units now available as vacation rentals. We are proud of it!

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
My biggest challenges are self-doubt and finding balance. In the age of social media, it is easy to compare ourselves to others and let all the intrusive thoughts sneak in. That aside, I also need help keeping up with the self-promotion aspect of social media. Social media is a developed skill, it takes a lot of time, and it can be quite challenging to promote your work when you have imposter syndrome. I do my best to quiet that self-doubt because, at the end of the day, I have confidence in my work. The business is growing, and I am more excited about what I do which each passing project. I am also a mother and want to set a good example for our children. My family and time with our daughter are most important to me, so finding the work/life balance as the business continues to grow is challenging and what suffers the most. Most are my social media strategy or the lack of social media strategy. If you are reading this and you’re a social media whiz, please email me 🙂

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Sarah Glenn Interiors is based in Atlanta, Georgia, but my work has taken me all over the country – most recently, to Charleston, SC. My passion for art and design inspires me as I help clients improve their home decor through furniture, lighting, artwork, and other decorative accents. I find joy in the process of assisting others in realizing the full potential of their space. Designed spaces can be trend-forward but must also be inviting and livable. The space should be a reflection of a client’s personality and lifestyle. My services include residential interior design, virtual interior design, FF&E sourcing and procurement, residential renovation design consulting, project management, and rental property furnishing.
