Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Brown, Founder and Crafter at Precious Sudz.
Who is this person behind Precious Sudz?
Simone is my name, and soap is my game! I am a lover of beautiful adventures, scents, and most of all, togetherness with my family. I’m a wife and a mother of four beautiful children. I won’t say life has been perfect for me, but challenges build character and fosters inspiration. In 2020, a lot of things happened that changed my life, especially in the earlier part of the year where my mother unexpectedly died, and the onset of Covid was rapid and merciless. My family’s circumstances had changed, and I needed to make something fresh to assist me escape the heartache and anxiety.
The curating of Precious Sudz
I started coming up with ideas for a hobby that would be entertaining and interesting for the kids and I. I was unsure of where everything would lead to, but it was always in my intention to create a natural product that was needed and affordable. My initial instinct as I began researching was to develop products that could wash and condition the hair. After that, my mind wandered, and I made the decision to look up how to manufacture hand sanitizer as we were in the height of a pandemic.
I went to the FDA website to locate additional information, and found a temporary recipe that the World Health Organization approved. I prepared a few for the family and gave some away to friends and families. In this, I learnt that products must always be updated and researched continuously. Unexpectedly, handmade soap articles and videos started to appear in my feed as I tried to keep up with the sanitization changes. I started to think to myself, “This would be a terrific product to make with the kids safely, where they can watch chemistry come to light.”
I discovered that producing homemade soap is a delightful experience, which came about after months of research and development. It was like watching chemistry in action. Making soaps was supposed to be merely a hobby for our family, but I quickly became obsessed with it. After a few applications, I became aware of the texture and feel of our skin. Two of my daughters have eczema, and the majority of my family has sensitive skin. After utilizing the goods for a few days, I noticed a decrease in their eczema and that the soaps weren’t irritating our skin. Unlike commercial brands, our soaps do not strip the natural oils from our skin because they contain natural components rather than harsh chemicals.
I provided some to friends and family, and they reported having the same results. Then it dawned on me that this might be a small side business that could help with our family’s expenses, or a child’s education. When I started to come up with names, Precious Sudz probably came to mind first. I came up with some other names with my family, but I kept returning to Precious Sudz. I’m enjoying the experience so far; even though it’s a lot of work, but regardless I love it. There is no if, or but about it; people need to clean their skin, and with that, a product they can trust to “Understand the assignment”.
The entire interaction ranging from product making to conversing with customers warms my heart. I aim to capture customers not only locally, but in all states as I have made my products accessible online for purchasing.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This road has been far from smooth! It has had more twists and turns than I can count. There was so much uncertainty about the product testing and where my clientele will come from. This was my first official business venture and had to learn new aspects of management, production, and marketing. I was so nervous as I had so little capital to manipulate but I never doubted the business’s success. I have learned that faith takes you a long way and cripples any doubt that blinds your path. The workload of production is still heavy but now I have gained a handle on every aspect of making my business successful.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I make natural handmade skin and hair care products from scratch. I use natural ingredients from its original sources. I use ingredients such as Shea, Coaco, Mango Butters, Olive, Coconut, Castor, Canola, Sweet Almond, Certified Palm oils, clays, Turmeric, Activated Charcoal, Goat milk, Essential, fragrance oils and the natural list can go on and on, but you kinda get the picture.
The handmade soaps are my main line followed by the Whipped Body Butters. I recently added hair and scalp dressing that works really well to maintain a healthy hair. When I’m at the market, they refer to me as the “Soap Lady”. I’m overjoyed that I can provide a variety of handmade goods at reasonable costs that people need and will utilize.
Are books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I have invested myself and time into staying up-to-date with the latest trends and changes. In order to continue learning from the experts, I joined a few Facebook groups for soap producers. These communities, in addition to YouTube and Google, are quite helpful; it’s almost like having a mentor.
