Conversations with Tasha Raquel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Raquel.

Hi Tasha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up being around the salon. My mom would take us to Clinton to get our hair done consistently. I remember always asking to help the stylist clean up the shop for a couple of dollars. As I got to middle school, I began to really explore my gift. I started doing my best friend’s hair in styles that were trendy in 08’. I would take a picture with my camera and put them in a photo book as my portfolio. My big sister came to me one day, asking if I knew that I could make this a profession and get paid. I replied no. She told me to look into trade/vocational school and that’s exactly what I did. I was able to graduate from high school and cosmetology school at the same time. In 2014, I started working at great clips. I realized I wanted to branch out and learn other techniques. Then I started working in a regular salon open setting up until 2018. I am now a suite owner.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t believe anything is smooth sailing. Cosmetology school was definitely tough when it came to testing. Learning things from skin diseases to hair chemicals. Memorizing every word and definition definitely wasn’t easy. As I became more experienced as a stylist, I also realize it’s more than just knowing how to achieve a hairstyle.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a versatile hairstylist. I specialize in Natural hair, extensions, Makeup, dreadlocks, custom wig unit construction, wig installs and many more. I love working as a freelance hair and makeup artist for various photo shoots, films, movie sets, weddings, and special events. I take the time to know each one of my clients and their specific haircare needs. Education is very important to me when it comes to your hair journey. My passion thrives from education and helping my client understand the tiny or big details of having healthy hair.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Trends come and go but history repeats itself! I think more digital products and online learning will increase in the coming years.
