Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Tull.
Hi Gabrielle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My background is specific to dance education. I am a Columbia, SC native, where my training and scholarship began. I came back to the state after pursuing my MFA in dance from UNCG in 2020. I am the program director for dance education and Winthrop University and an assistant professor of dance.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road: changing careers from public school, back to grad school, and now in higher education has been quite the challenge in finding a balance between personal interests and family time. The workload for sure has increased now that I’m in higher education as the road towards tenure is extensive, taking up to 6 years to obtain. I’m learning and investing so much in my practice now. It’s been incredible.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a choreographer artistically. My recent work entitled Sandbox features dancers moving in the space with a large see-saw on stage. It was inspired by the architects who built a hot pink see-saw at the Texas-Mexico border to help kids tap back into the childlike euphoric experience while dealing with both a tough environment and experiences there beyond their control. This work will be featured at the ACDA 2023 conference (American College Dance Association National Conference).
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am a wine enthusiast! My love of travel and being exposed to wine from Italy to Napa and even my in-laws in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA has allowed me to pursue the field in ways that are intriguing. I appreciate the range of educational experiences you can receive from the wine industry.
