Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Holland.
Hi Lindsey, so excited to have you with us today. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Thanks so much for interviewing me!
I am a children’s book author, and am currently writing a book series – Teddy Traveler Books – about a teddy bear that travels the world! The bear’s name is Teddy Traveler, and in each book Teddy visits a new country and learns about the people, places, history, and culture there! The first four books in the series are currently available – Teddy Traveler Goes to Australia, Teddy Traveler Visits Italy, Teddy Traveler Explores Egypt, and Teddy Traveler Discovers Peru. And there are dozens more books on the way! I am hoping to write one book about every country in the world!
What inspired you to write this series? Tell us more about your story.
I grew up in a family of modern-day explorers – I guess you can say we were the original “Bucket List Family!” My parents loved to travel and brought my sisters and I up traveling the world. I was only a few months old when I got my first passport and went on my first overseas trip – and the rest is history!
As part of our education, every year my parents would take us to new places. They wanted us to not only learn about the history & culture of different countries in our textbooks, but to experience them first hand!
I very clearly remember visiting Egypt in 7th grade. I had just finished studying Ancient Egypt when we traveled there and it really made everything I had studied come alive! We got to go inside the Pyramids, see real mummies, and even ride camels through the Sahara Desert!
At 14 years old, I remember studying about the Roman Empire and then subsequently exploring Rome as a family. I was absolutely fascinated by it all, because it no longer was just a few dates on a page – it was real! I was so mesmerized by that trip to Italy that I even ended up going back 10 years later to live in Rome for a year & learn Italian!
On other trips we hiked Machu Picchu in Peru, climbed the Great Wall of China, took a safari in Kenya, stood in awe of the Taj Mahal in India, explored the beauty of New Zealand, and snowboarded in Switzerland. I could go on and on with the stories I have of the places we’ve been!
To put it simply, I fell in love with traveling the world. To date, I have visited 131 countries – and I’m still not done traveling!
However, several years ago I decided I wanted to do more than just enjoy my own travels – I wanted to give every child the opportunity to travel the world as a kid – just like I did!
So I started writing Teddy Traveler Books, so that kids everywhere – no matter if they can afford to or not – can travel the world. They can learn about the people, history, and culture just like I did! And maybe it will inspire them to also go out and see it for themself one day.
That’s how Teddy Traveler was born!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely not easy at all to write a book series or start your own company – and I am doing both. I have so many ideas for Teddy Traveler & Co, but I am still searching for a partnership – someone else that will catch my vision and work with me to make it happen together!
