Meet Kimberly and La’Tristan Grimes of Sustain Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly and La’Tristan Grimes.

Hi Kimberly and La’Tristan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was in my junior year in college at Charleston Southern for Early Childhood Education when I first stumbled upon the opportunity we now have. I was looking for a part time job that could work with my class schedule and found a local nutrition club similar to what we now own. I worked there for a year or so and then took over the second location after I graduated from CSU. My now husband, La’Tristan was working for Amazon at that time while in school for his master’s for Clinical Counseling. He joined me on this business endeavor after a few months of working at the other club. We now run our nutrition club and on the process of opening up another one with a business partner next year. We want to continue to expand and have nutrition clubs with the same mission and goals as us all over South Carolina.

We are both in our early twenties, 23 + 25 year olds looking for a better opportunity. I was shown what type of impact we could make in the community while having fun by having a nutrition club. Ever since the opportunity was shared with us, we haven’t looked back since. We often have my bonus daughter here too sometimes and she is able to see what we do and be involved in growing our business, in hopes to inspire her.

We aim to bring a healthy, happy environment to the Goose Creek community and so far, we have been able to do that through events and workouts we’ve held. We have done 2-3 sips and shops where we invite a few local small business owners to set up a table and share/sell the product/service they offer. We’ve also held a Small Entrepreneur day for young children who are entrepreneurs in the making. They sold their creation and showcased their talents. We currently hold workouts such as X-Treme Hip Hop which is taught by a local X-Treme Hip Hop coach, Taya. We are all about supporting other local businesses as we grow ours. We have a mission to bring the community together through health + wellness.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. During our one-year party, the beginning of March 2022, we had a car run into our building 3 hours into the opening. Thankfully nobody was injured. We are so blessed with amazing customers though, because we were able to go back up and running through a small window cut out that one of our customer’s family built that same day. We practically had the full front of our shop enclosed with plywood making us look closed. We were like this for 6 months. Through that, we were robbed 2 times. The first time they broke through another window panel, leaving us with only one window panel. The car crashed through our door, and 2 out of 4 window panels. We stayed positive through all of this though and it definitely helped build our characters.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a nutrition club off St. James Ave near Lowes and Chick-fil-A. We offer meal replacement protein shakes, clean energy teas, protein iced coffees, wellness shots, and more! We are well known for the teas we have. Our teas give you a clean boost of energy while also boosting your metabolism. It also helps with your digestive system and aids with mental clarity. Our shakes are meal replacement shakes, only 200-250 calories, 24g of protein, low carb, low fat, and low sugar. We offer more items that caters to sustain/nourish your body without sacrificing the yummy taste. What sets us apart from others is that we aim to build a happy and healthy community. We host different events and workouts that makes us stand out. I’m most proud of the community since we’ve created. We create a positive environment for people to be themselves and we also provide health and wellness profiles to help people reach their health goals. We treat every person who walks through our doors like family. We host weekly workouts that are open for everyone to come! We do X-Treme Hip Hop on Wednesdays at 7:30pm and we just started to do Yoga on Tuesdays at 5:30pm. We want to offer more workout classes though to help bring the community together while working on their health goals.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
We definitely have, we #1 learned patience. Due to covid, a decent amount of our supplies are more difficult to find, like cups, lids, etc. Also, this hindered the process of getting our door and window fixed from the car crash since most of the materials needed were out of stock or on backorder. It took about 7 months to get our store fully back up and running normal due to all the delays.
