Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Miszko.
Hi Tanya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The short version is that I found my passion early and followed it. The long version is “oh what a journey it has been.” I had been a Gymnast all my life, but the TV show “American Gladiator” really made me fall in love with having muscles and being healthy. I started my college degree as Pre-Med and quickly realized that I didn’t want to deal with sick people all the time. Rather, I wanted to try to keep them healthy with exercise – primary medicine so to speak. That realization leads me to choose “Exercise Science” as my future.
While I loved to exercise and would say I was a “gym rat” back in the day, I never wanted to own a gym. The exercise was my passion and something I loved, but I had no interest in managing a business. Fast forward to my mid-30s, I moved back to my hometown in NY, bought the property, and opened a fitness studio! I still didn’t own a gym. I built a community! My passion for exercise, self-empowerment, and showing love to all humans attracted the most incredible community ever. We built my 30 Minutes of Everything studio in upstate NY together.
The studio and the program morphed over the years. We doubled our space. We increased our membership by 700%! We had 93% retention rates. Then the pandemic hit. Life as a small business in upstate NY changed dramatically. My type A personality went into overdrive to create a plan B. I didn’t have one in place. I was living my dream so there was no need for a plan B! Over the course of a few years and many hours of praying, I realized my plan B. I shifted my business model to an online platform so that I could still continue to keep my community strong and healthy, but could also expand to include people outside of my local area.
And, I could do this from anywhere. So, I sold my property and moved to SC. I am now running my fitness community online and loving that I can do what I love from anywhere!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Until the pandemic, I can’t really say that anything I experienced in my journey was a deal breaker. I hustled and hustled and did what I needed to do to succeed: working long hours, networking, continuing to better myself, and always finding ways to learn more. The hustle got tiring, but my studio continued to fuel me.
The business struggles during the pandemic were an eye-opener for me. I’m a rule follower and I like control so the ever-changing environment surrounding the regulations of operating a business during and after the pandemic was quite stressful. Although stressful, they also woke me up to things that I needed to change in my life to have more life-work balance.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love what I do! Honestly, truly love what I do. I make people stronger; physically & emotionally. Sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly. I’m a Functional Strength Coach. I coach group fitness classes online. Although it’s a group class, my clients get individual attention. It’s like a personal training session, but with other people.
I have my Doctorate in Exercise Science and have studied the field continuously for the past 25 years. Fitness evolves and if you’re not keeping up with the research, you’re not doing your best. I bring my best to my clients every day! I’m super picky about proper form, rates of progression, and training the body on how it is connected. I provide instruction, encouragement, and expertise in a non-judgmental, supportive environment.
I challenge my clients safely. I never ask them to do things they’re not ready for. I ask them to do movements they’re physically capable of, even if they don’t think so. They do it and they’re surprised and super happy about their accomplishment. I believe in them and they trust me. Every day I laugh and smile. I have a great “job”!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Daily I read a blog (https://ultimatesandbagtraining.com/blog/) that keeps me up to date on functional fitness. I love the FitRadio app. It provides a plethora of music mixed at different speeds for different types of exercise. Personally, I start my day with the YouVersion Bible App. I read 2-3 devotionals while I drink my coffee. That sets my intention and gets my head straight for the day.
