Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Johnson.
Hi Britney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started doing hair in high school. I started with braiding hair, from natural to weave. Back in 2009 my junior year a classmate ask me to do his locs. I’d never done them before until that day. From there, more people started asking and of course, I did it. 2011 I graduated from cosmetology school (Academy of Cosmetology). I offered services from natural hair care, weaves, braids, and locs.
Back then locs weren’t as popular as they are today. 2012 I had my son, Raeshawn, I got into the call center life stepping away from the hair industry however I still had a few clients that never left my side. 2018 I had my daughter, Yaleah, I lost my job at T-mobile, lost my apartment, lost my car, and hit rock bottom.
The good thing about hitting rock bottom is the only way is up from there. I started working at a hotel. I wasn’t really happy. I met Slim, the owner of Slim’s grooming lounge located in North Charleston, SC. We spoke a lot and he offered me a booth in his shop. After a while, I noticed I would call out from the hotel whenever someone needed an appointment.
2019 I caught Covid management at the hotel didn’t care about me or my kid’s health they just wanted me to come back. I never went back. I prayed with my granny and stuck things out at the shop. My clientele grew over the years. My loc clients didn’t leave any room for me to offer any other services. I will say I’m blessed, booked, and busy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I have good days and bad days. Some days I have zero clients, some days I have 10 clients. You have to promote yourself. The people you think will support normally won’t.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Theloclink is based out of Summerville, SC. I specialize in the health of locs, maintenance, and styling. What sets me apart from other locticians is I just don’t “do your hair” I also give you knowledge of your hair along the way.
There’s not a question that goes unanswered. If I don’t know the answer I will find the answer for you. I’m most proud that my brand is getting the recognition it deserves. My brand offers locs services from basic maintenance, detox, steam treatments, and hair growth oil.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is setting a goal and reaching that goal.
