Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya T.
Kenya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised all over NYC. My father, who is a DJ, would play, mix and scratch music all day long. It was and is life for him. He exposed me to all genres of music and taught me to appreciate the composition of a song. My mother, a true lover of music, would listen to an artist’s full album over and over and over again. She wasn’t a fan of sharing her musical gifts and talents but she always encouraged mine.
Inadvertently, They taught me how to listen to every instrument and admire the melodies used to create something beautiful. I appreciate and thank them for showing sharing that love. That, paired with watching Michael and Janet videos, started my love of dance. Around age 8, I would stand in front of the TV and learn as much choreography as I could. I would record videos and replay them over and over until I knew every dance move.
I also loved singing but I was so shy to sing. I didn’t sound like Whitney, Mariah, or the older women who sang in the church so I thought I couldn’t sing. It wasn’t until I heard Sade’s beautiful low and sultry tone, that I toyed with the idea of singing. She and Toni Braxton became my biggest influences. I studied their voices, their sounds, and melodies.
It was there that I found the confidence to become the singer I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road… What’s that?! Lol. It took me a long time to find the confidence to sing in front of anyone. For a long time, I would sit in my room, turn the music all the way up and sing under the music. Out of fear someone would hear me and pick apart how low and different my tone was.
That fear prevented me from doing what I’ve genuinely loved my whole life… Creating music. There were a few times, within these last couple of years, where I almost talked myself into giving up. I had to kill the self-saboteur I created years ago.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist who happens to sing, write, produce, compose and engineer music. I don’t like to categorize myself as just a singer because I do more than sing a song. I’m more of a melodist. I use my voice as an instrument to create melodies in place of actual instruments.
When I’m recording a song, I can hear where I would want the strings, horns, percussion, etc to be and I create that sound through melodies and harmonies. That’s what sets me apart from most. It’s not about being famous or having millions of followers, it’s all about what my music makes you feel.
It heals. It entices. It incites. It liberates. It brings joy and pain. It encourages emotional and I’m so proud of that.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
My favorite book in the world is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. In it, Ruiz guides you through finding freedom, love, and true happiness with who and where you are.
I read this book at least 2x a year to remind myself to “be impeccable with my words, not take anything personally, not make assumptions, and ALWAYS do my best!”
