Meet Andrea Beam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Beam.

Hi Andrea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’ve always loved to write. I love telling stories. Until now, I have spent my adult working life teaching in the public school system. Mostly in special education. Writing has always been more of a hobby.

A few years ago, I made the decision to resign from my teaching position and follow my dream of writing full-time. Freelance writing has been so much fun and afforded me many opportunities to enjoy everything Greenville has to offer!

This year, I submitted my first children’s manuscript to a publisher and was offered a contract. Being able to add “author” to my resume is very exciting! My book should be out sometime next year.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing about life has been smooth. I take that back. My family has been smooth. I grew up in a very loving home.

My parents are super supportive and are the reason I am where I am today. My marriage ended after eleven years, leaving me with an emotionally fragile young son and a broken heart.

That’s when my life took an unexpected turn. My son has autism and ADHD. He’s come SO far. We’ve come so far.

It’s been a long road, but I wouldn’t trade the struggles. We’re both stronger people. Being a mom is my favorite job. I’m very blessed.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What do I do? That’s a loaded question in this season of life! I’m a mom to a teenage son with autism. I homeschool my son and my eleven-year-old nephew. I’m also a nanny to my cousin’s two-year-old little boy. Basically, I’m surrounded by kids all day, every day. I love (almost) every second of it! All three boys are kind, smart, and loving, and fill my days with so much joy.

I also work with Greenville360, a local news/media website. Working and writing with/for the founder, David Kabrin and his wife, Kelsey has been the catalyst for my whole writing career. I have countless opportunities to cover events and experiences. I would say I’m mainly “known for” writing about family-friendly experiences around town.

I also write a personal blog at andreabeam.com I started it when I adopted my son from Guatemala. I needed a place to dump my feelings. That was almost sixteen years ago!

If I had to choose one thing I’m most proud of, it would be my work with the kids. It’s not always been easy, but I’ve sacrificed and worked really hard to “do life” with them daily. One day they’ll be older and move on. I know I’ll have no regrets about how I spent this time. That’s a very satisfying feeling.
