Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Kolb.
Hi Eva, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have always been an artist and attempted a variety of “side hustles” before finding success with Time Capsule Design. My original business name was Time Capsule Jewelry and I focused on making jewelry from discarded and repurposed items.
After some time in that lane, I decided it wasn’t for me and I switched mediums – to working with a Cricut and vinyl on a variety of different substrates. I took custom orders and made a few original designs as well, which I found to be much more fulfilling than anything I had tried so far.
When Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away, I immediately got several requests for shirts with her iconic dissent collars. I wanted to do right by her memory (may it be a blessing), so I decided to donate $5 from every shirt sold to Jamie Harrison and other democratic candidates in South Carolina. The shirts went viral on TikTok and I was able to donate over $1500. Ever since then, I have donated 10% of my monthly sales to different organizations and democratic candidates.
A full list is on my Etsy bio, and for the month of August, donations will be going to Krystle Matthews here in SC (running against Tim Scott). Blue dots feel very alone in states like South Carolina, and it has been amazing to find so many other blue dots and feel solidarity, community, and connection through my art.
It has been a rough few years and channeling my negative energy into art in such a way that it comes out the other side as humor has been incredibly therapeutic.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Relatively smooth. There is a lot of negativity towards women as well as towards leftists, liberals, democrats, and people who rock the boat, and that has been difficult at times, but it has also strengthened my resolve. It is easy to get burnt out creatively and I struggle with “writer’s block” from time to time as well, but it comes back in waves.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make political statement art, mostly on t-shirts and tea towels. I am known for my sense of humor (dark, dry, witty) and the cartoonish yet realistic style of my art.
I like to use tea towels because they are typically seen as demure household/kitchen items that don’t get much sassier than “I like to cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food”. Nobody expects a bold statement like “fuck Lindsey Graham” on a tea towel, and that juxtaposition is so fun to play with. Society expects us to play certain roles, but we can rewrite those rules.
I am most proud of the community I have found thanks to my art and the funds we have raised. We are stronger together, and I could not have made these donations on my own.
What matters most to you?
My children. The future of this planet depends on them, and I love them dearly.
