Today we’d like to introduce you to Randall Fowler.
Hi Randall, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I sang with Ricky Skaggs when I was 3 years old in ft Lee, VA. I’ve always been singing. I grew up in Charleston since I was ten years old, Goose Creek specifically. I played baseball and football and you could always catch me singing in a locker room.
When I graduated high school, I worked in the kitchen at a local chicken joint, Kickin Chicken in Summerville. I was singing in the dish pit one day and the bar manager overheard me and asked if I’d ever thought about being in a band.
He was a drummer. For the next ten years, I was the frontman of a cover band, Ellen Drive. We played all over Charleston and traveled the southeast. We won two rounds of “Battle of the Bands” and recorded an EP.
It was a fun time. In 2018, I decided I wanted to explore a solo career and get back to my country roots. I started writing with my friend, James Chamberlain and I got the opportunity to open up for Tracey Lawrence summer of 2018. From that point on, the fire was lit inside of me and I knew I belonged on bigger stages.
I’ve since got the opportunity to open up for Chris Lane, Mitchell Tenpenny, Walker Hayes, Scotty McCreery, Muscadine Bloodline, and Priscilla Block. I continued to write and started recording with an amazing team in Nashville, Saxman Studios. I started releasing my Nashville-produced music in 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic.
Shot a couple of music videos around Charleston, you can find them on my YouTube under Randall Fowler Music. And at the end of 2020 my song “Coming Home (One Way Road)” was my first song added to a Spotify curated playlist. Nashville quickly became a second home for me. Traveling to record and be a part of songwriters’ nights, I quickly realized I needed to move.
After the release of my cover of “Midnight Rider”, encouraged by my TikTok followers (music video shot at Henry’s on the market) and my second release of 2022, “Someone Who Does”, nearing 100k streams written by Nashville hitmakers, my wife and I sold our home and decided it’s time to make my dream a goal.
We found a place in Nashville and we will raise our 8-month-old daughter there. My next song will be released on August 5 and is a summertime jam, “Summertime and Country”. I’d like to add I am an indie artist and making all of this happen with no big label help, yet. Every dime I make from music goes straight back into making new music.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I had vocal chord surgery in 2016. The scariest thing of my life but I recovered after a few months off.
At the end of 2018, I had to be on vocal rest for a few months to overdo it. I’ve learned to take it easy when needed and how to really use my voice and not get to that point since.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been nominated 3 times in the Charleston city paper for Best Male Vocalist and won that title in 2020.
That made me proud that after 12 years of singing around town, I got that recognition. I’m a vocalist through and through and I always wanted to play guitar, so I’ve taught myself over the last 6 years.
It’s a great accomplishment. I host my own shows at the legendary Windjammer and I’ve been able to sell it out three times. My next show there is on 7/23. I’m a full-time musician, music is my life.
What do you think about happiness?
Providing for my family and showing my daughter that anything is possible when you go after it. And music. Music makes me happy. Some days you’re down and music moves you. Some days you’re up and music reminds you.
