Rising Stars: Meet Telia Rivers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Telia Rivers.

Hi Telia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Okay, I will try to keep this as brief as possible haha I’ve been passionate about real estate, storytelling, and documentaries for most of my life. Growing up, if I wasn’t hanging out with my Mom in her Salons or helping my Dad with carpentry work, I was watching TV news, and documentaries, or pretending I was the house party DJ on cassette tapes with my friends. I was convinced that I was going to be a news anchor one day but realized that I really enjoyed working behind the scenes a little bit more. I’ve been actively working in the broadcasting field for over 20 years now. I started in radio as an intern, was hired on as an entertainment reporter, then morning show co-host and promotions director. I also did some mobile DJing. From radio, I transitioned to television production. My first roles in television were master control operator and graphics operator, then technical news director, technical media producer, and TV show producer. Besides being a proud wife and boy mom, some of my biggest accomplishments are obtaining my South Carolina Real Estate license and creating, directing, and producing a local television show called “Bounce Around Charleston”. The concept of the show is to highlight those in Charleston that are making an impact within the community, and promote music artists and local events. I realized during the process of booking guests for interviews they needed to be prepped. For business owners, a great way to reach potential customers or new staff is by video testimonials. Sharing positive experiences about businesses through an interview really works! So I started offering media interview prep training to individuals and corporations.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There definitely have been some bumps in the road! First, let’s start with real estate. My struggles along the way with real estate were finding my niche and simply promoting myself. This is not a business where you can sit back and wait for people to come to you. I had to push my introvertness aside. You have to continue to figure out ways to let people know who you are and what you do.

For media, I started off as an intern in radio but the ultimate goal was always to make it to television. Some of the struggles along the way was proving to those in charge that I’m capable of the tasks. I definitely got some “No’s” but I didn’t give up. Eventually, I started getting more responsibilities. When radio stations started moving in the direction of sidication that’s when I realized it was time to make a move to television. Every role/position got me closer to the next. The first television station I worked at for 4 years as a master control operator and graphics operator. I learned how to direct news broadcasts during the last 2 years while employed there and wasn’t able to get hired on Full-time as a newscast director. I did however get hired on as a full-time newscast director at another news station. My next goal was to create a TV show. It took me 2 1/2 years of hearing “No” to finally getting a “Yes”.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

My name is Kelshun Smith and I would like to nominate Jean’s Angels for a story. This Organization was founded seven years ago and they started by mentoring and pouring into children who have lost their parents due to the terminal illness. Every year they take the kids at the end of the summer to Disney World for seven days. They also provide annual book bag giveaway where they provide over 1000 book bags, school supplies and clothing for kids in the Tri-County area. They also have ten community give away a year with over $200,000 worth of household items, hygiene items, brand clothing and shoes, furniture and so much more. This past Christmas they bless over 1800 lids with 3000 toys. They also built a mobile Laundry trailer that has four washers and dryers to help wash clothes for the homeless . They are currently in the process of building a shower trailer . So these are just a few of the many reasons why they deserve to be Recognize. They are truly hidden gem.
