Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathaniel Perkins aka DJ Carolina X from Columbia South Carolina.
Carolina X, we appreciate you taking the time, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Around 16 years old, I started out as a party promoter and music producer.
As time went on, I fell in love with the realm of being a DJ. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was my favorite TV show as a teenager and when I learned that one of the characters on the show, Jazz, was a DJ in real life by the name of DJ Jazzy Jeff, I was intrigued by his story and his work.
Lil Jon was also my favorite producer at the time and I also learned that he was a DJ as well. So, I took the time myself to practice how to become one. I took some lessons from SC native DJ D-Tec to learn the craft. Years later, at college parties, weddings, and corporate events, I was later discovered by DJ Loui Vee to be a part of IHeart Radio.
Ever since then, I’ve been on the radio for 7 years and it opened doors for me to work with a lot of major musical artists and tastemakers in the industry including Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, Future, Dababy, and many more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was 50/50, to say the least.
At this point in time, I’m happy with all the great people I was able to meet and work with. Some of the struggles were small but nothing I couldn’t overcome. Lost friendships on the way.
Also, it was hard getting my foot through the door in certain situations. That’s when I learned to build relationships with certain individuals to build my report and references. Ever since then it was smooth sailing since.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in a multitude of things but my main occupation is being a Radio and Tour DJ.
I’m proud of the way I’m able to touch peoples’ lives through music. I have traveled to different cities to perform at multiple concerts and festivals. What sets me apart from others is that I know how to brand myself.
What I learned in the business of being a DJ is that EVERYONE is becoming a DJ, but I stand out because I know how to promote and market myself along with proving my worth.
Flyers, posters, business cards, email blasts, and billboards will have my face and my work in numerous cities.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take so I believe in myself to be a huge risk-taker.
The most successful people in the industry took some risks so I believe that everybody should develop courage and self-esteem. If you believe in yourself, others will definitely believe in you and your work.
