Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia Wilson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I was never “ the pretty girl” so before I found self-love even in makeup I turned to makeup to feel like “the pretty girl”. I began back in high school mixing up different things, like creating lip gloss and lipsticks out of crayons, oils and natural fragrances. I then grew to an age where I could wear makeup and I found the fun in creating looks with the entire color wheel and I did just that. I remember in college I began to invest in my craft. With my many blessings, I had friends that knew I sucked lol but believed in me so I played on their faces until I got it. I advanced into doing lives via Facebook, and teaching eyebrow classes while I still worked on getting better in makeup. One day I took a leap and decided I wanted to do a photoshoot to advertise my progress and hard work so I called a few friends and they came running with no questions asked. Well, little did I know my first shoot would be posted across social media and supported the way that it did. That alone drove me to go even further and pick up creative directing because seeing a bigger picture full of colors and creations that were pushed by me, just blew my mind. I started asking for models and doing shoots for free just to get my name out there and to my surprise, it was a hit. I began getting clients for both makeup gigs and putting together their vision for a creative look. The better I got in one area the more I wanted to learn. Being able to be a part of so many others’ lives and creating such a personal bond with them knowing I was a part of some of their most memorable moments have been my biggest fulfillment in my career. The joy of seeing their faces for weddings as brides, new mothers, engagements, birthdays, everyday looks..just being a part of women’s lives who also just needed to see themselves in a different light has brought me to understand my purpose. Knowing that God put me here to be a blessing and I’m forever grateful He saw fit for me to do just that. In this profession we are looked at as “just makeup artists” but we are more than just that. We are therapist for some that may not have the support to vent to. We are new beginnings and even a breath of fresh air, we become long-time friends and a part of some of our clients’ families. I love everything about this life as a makeup artist and creative director.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve faced many challenges going through my journey. Most of my challenges were with myself and I feel a lot of us are ashamed to say that. I’ve heard “no” many times. I’ve not gotten partnerships and PR I’ve applied to and worked hard on. One of my biggest challenges was losing my dad and being able to stay focused. In the process of building my business I’ve been disappointed in many things, I’ve tried to develop and build for my business. If it’s not from the ground up it’s really hard to get it done how you want it exactly. In all my challenges faced all while learning to be an adult, I’ve learned no attest to how far behind I get JUST KEEP SWIMMING.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a makeup artist and creative director. I help bring someone’s vision to life and make their moments more memorable. My job is to make you feel even more like yourself and embrace those parts of you, you may have neglected in everyday life. My most proud moment would be my very first photoshoot and wedding ever. My first photo shoot I put together from beginning to end. I did each face to fit the skin tone and colors of their scenes as well as be apart and direct. My first wedding ever I did 16 faces including the bride all by myself and to this day she still thanks me and treats me like years of friendship. I specialize in natural makeup and face fitting for individuals as well as a creative eye for capturing the visions of my clients.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is knowing I fulfilled the needs of each of my clients and capture their individuality. This is extremely important to me because having a signature look is perfectly fine but knowing how to meet the needs and understanding your clients is what matters most because no one is the same.
