Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Hyman.
Hi Sabrina, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
So, we know many things…and people were birthed during the Pandemic. Balloon Bash was one of them lol. When our jobs shut down we took a lot of time to relax, workout, eat, dabble in gardening, and all sorts of random things to entertain ourselves. One of the things I missed most, ironically, was my job. I was working at a rental and events company, inspired by Annette, now IBA Rentals, when the pandemic hit, and we shut down temporarily. I was really missing helping people plan their events and felt really sad that so many people had to cancel and miss out on so many special life moments. So, one day, I was scrolling on IG and saw, what I now know to be a MASSIVE “Balloon Bouquet” that spelled out “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” with the huge balloon letters. Mostly I was curious thinking “how the heck did they get that to stick as on piece!?! Then I went down a balloon rabbit hole and I looked over at Dot, my partner and co-founder, all excited like ” BABE!!! We should do this!!” He shrugged his shoulders and was like “hm, alright” and BOOM #TheBash was born. What’s even more crazy is that I have literally been afraid of balloons my entire life. So having the audacity to start a Balloon Business is a hilarious twist of fate in itself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Whew, we would definitely say the hardest part is balancing a business that is growing very quickly, while still working a job. We had no idea Balloon Bash would take off so quickly and we have had so many amazing opportunities, finding not only the time, but the SPACE to create each piece has been a challenge that we take on proudly. Other than that, I don’t know how many couples work together but LAWD is that a task in itself lol. You have two different people approaching one goal with opposite views at times and melting the two together can be quite a time. It’s very hilarious to get into an argument about how pastel blue and pale blue ARE NOT the same shade! LOL
As you know, we’re big fans of Balloon Bash Charleston. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Balloon Bash Charleston is a luxury balloon decor service for all occasions. We believe that everyone deserves a pop of luxury and we create custom pieces to enhance any event. Our most popular designs include stylized organic balloon garlands, balloon columns, balloon walls, and custom balloon sculptures, we will pretty much adorn your entire space in balloons if you let us. We believe what people love most about us is how thoughtful each of our displays are. We wanted our company to exude glamour, and luxury, giving an over-the-top experience that can be enjoyed from an office space to a wedding reception. We wanted to stand out and create something that was different, bold, and simply undeniable! We have definitely achieved that and carved out own little lane here in South Carolina.
We’ve done everything from baby showers to grand openings, USC sporting events, and so much more. When you think of a celebration, we want your immediate thought be “I have to #BookTheBash!!”
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Hmm, I would say maybe being a business created after social media can be considered lucky? Social media allows us to share so many things so quickly that formally may have taken years to catch on. Each time our work is shared on social media, it has the potential to automatically be exposed to hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people at once. In that same way, information about our industry spreads quicker. I definitely can say we have benefited from the age of social media. We even learned how to make our first balloon garland on YouTube! We had no formal training before that. Heck, I was literally afraid of balloons before that, lol. So, I would say we are definitely lucky and fortunate to have social media as a tool to grow our business and connect with people across the board in a way that many did not have access to until recently.
