Daily Inspiration: Meet Hilary Wind

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilary Wind.

Hilary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Wind Wix Candles started in January of 2018. I was going through a very emotional situation and I always feel that when I keep myself busy, my mind doesn’t race and I can focus on what I’m doing. I am the type of person that always has to have a project to work on. Even if I’m somewhat busy, I tend to overwhelm myself so that I don’t have time to sit and think about what is bringing me down. I’ve always been a candle fanatic but didn’t like how dirty they burn and the scents giving me headaches. I decided to make some candles as gifts just for family and friends. I researched clean ingredients for weeks (actually, I still do research all the time) and I knew I wanted something unique that nobody else had in the area so I chose coconut wax, cotton wicks, and clean, phthalate-free oils.

Well to make a long story short, my hobby grew into a career. After only 3 years of making candles, I was able to leave my full-time job at the hospital that I worked at for 10 years. Best decision ever! My home-based business has grown into something that I could never have imagined. From August – December of last year, I hand poured close to 10k candles. I’m selling my candles at over 40 locations (nationwide). I also have 3 girls that help me with all of my events. I’m truly blessed to have all of them. I hope to continue growing and my dream is to have a large space that has a storefront in front and candle-making in the back.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve had many obstacles where I was ready to thrown in the towel. I remember in the beginning I would make a small batch of candles and I couldn’t smell them and they looked hideous. I would cry and say that I give up. I felt so defeated because of all the research I did and I still couldn’t get them perfect.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Believe it or not, I still make all my candles in my 3-bedroom home. It can be very difficult because like most people who work away from home, they can leave their work at work. Mine is always right there and I can’t get away from it, ever!

I am very proud that I have done this all by myself. I am the sole maker, marketer, supply orderer, label designer, bookkeeper, you name it. I would like this to change in the future so I have a bit more freedom.

I believe my products are as clean as a candle can possibly get. Coconut wax is the elite of waxes, but don’t let that make you think my candles are much higher in price because that is not the case. I price my candles the same as many soy makers. You are just sure to get a better product at the same price.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was growing up on a small farm in Wisconsin. I would spend all day outside with all my animals without a care in the world. Life was much better back then.
