Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Pressley.
Hi Sydney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
When Covid-19 first got introduced to me as a college student it was during our spring break. We received an email from the school saying to not to return back to school because of how serious this pandemic has become. With that being said, I was just in the house bored with nothing to do. I am from Charleston, SC so I’ve always known about “Charleston Chewies”. One day, I told my mom to go to the store to get me everything that I needed to make some Chewies. I made them and posted them on my Facebook page. I did not post to sell at all, I was just posting because they looked really good and they were the Bomb.com. This young lady decided to comment on my post and asked if she could get some and I told her to come on by because I had plenty to share. She came by and I gave her about six pieces in a Ziploc bag. She then proceeded to ask me how much for them and I said to her that these weren’t for sale and that she was good. She ended up paying me $5 for them anyways. I received a message from her stating how delicious they were and she told me that I needed to start selling them. I went on Facebook and asked my Facebook friends their thoughts about it and everyone agreed. This happened back in March 2020. It’s now May 2022 and I’ve had my business for two years now. I made everything official with getting my LLC and EIN on March 26th, 2020 because at that point I knew this was something that I would grow to love. I started off with making just a pan of Chewies to now making cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes, etc. It’s honestly a blessing to see how a stranger can change your life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business was not a smooth road in the beginning. I’ve always known how to bake because of my great grandmother but I’ve always been the one to help out and not do it on my own. I had to learn measurements, the right kind of flour, and how many eggs to use with certain ingredients. I’ve messed up some orders and some were perfectly fine. I would never forget I had a customer who purchased some Chewies and decided to go on Facebook and bashed me because they were too hard. I had another customer go on Facebook and bashed me because it came out more like a cake than a chewy. It’s a learning experience for everything and I’m glad I was very patient and never gave up.

Ruby’s Sweet Tooth LLC. Is a home-based bakery as of right now located in Summerville, SC. I provide some of the best treats you could ever taste. Some popular treats that I’ve made that has expanded my clientele are Chewies, Strawberry Brownies, Red Velvet Oreo Brownies, and Cookies & Cream Cookies. I also specialize in Cakes as well for Birthdays, Baby Showers, Anniversary, etc. Everything that I make is from scratch and I put all of my love into every item. I’ve always been taught “Presentation is Everything” and I try my hardest to make everything look and taste as perfect as it can be.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
The first person I have to give credit to will definitely be Christina Fields. She’s my mentor and an amazing baker in the Charleston area as well. Any question that I have, she’s always quick with answering it. She pushes and motivates me so much and I am so thankful for that. She never looked at me as a competition instead she took me in as a friend. If you ever need a GORGEOUS cake or some AMAZING treats, Treats by Christina is her name! My parents and friends are definitely my cheerleaders as well because they keep me going and they’re always sending me new things to try out. They have so much faith in me. Anytime I experiment a new item, I always go to them to try it out because they always give their honest opinion. Having great people on your side with running a business is very important.
