Today we’d like to introduce you to Alena Popova.
Hi Alena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey to photography started with chasing my now 14-year-old with a camera during his toddler years. The birth of my second baby inspired me to try myself in newborn photography and I never looked back. I have received professional training in posing and safety from several well-known newborn photographers in the country and never stop learning and improving.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I knew from the start where I wanted to take my business but it was hard to find a teacher to learn tips and tricks of posing a newborn safely. Attending an in-person workshop was the best decision I made early on and I still take one workshop a year to refine my skills. The most difficult part was pricing my work and understanding business administration and how to become profitable. I was lucky to find a great group of local photographers that supported my journey and helped me to find resources I needed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in maternity, newborn, and baby’s first-year portraiture. My studio covers every aspect and milestone of the motherhood journey: from pregnancy to first birthday photo session and everything in between. I believe in documenting big family milestones creating long-lasting memories that will be cherished for generations to come. I am known for my timeless and classic style, huge collection of props sourced from around the world, and believe it or not, my patience with babies.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite memories from childhood is always sewing a new dress for my Barbies. I loved everything creative from knitting to sewing and designing. Sometimes I think all those cute newborn props is what attracted me to this style of photography in the first place. I also spent a lot of time playing piano and attending music school
