Conversations with Ashley Marcum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Marcum.

Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Leveling Up Through Adversity

You get what you put in.

That’s what I’ve learned throughout my years navigating fitness.

I’ve been morbidly obese, anorexic, bulimic, orthorexia, depressed, you name it. But yet, despite all that adversity, I never gave up. I pushed through until I finally got it right. I graduated at the top of my class from Ohio University with a 4.0 GPA, earning my Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise in Physiology with a minor in Nutrition Science. I’ve been online coaching and in-person training for almost five years now. I’ve worked with a host of people with all types of backgrounds and goals. My philosophy is to find the root cause of any issue a client may come to me with, so we can address it, and make a game plan to overcome it for the long haul.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. When life challenges you, you have two options. Become resentful because you refused to adapt, change, and grow for the better, or become relentless because you did. That’s my motto. Leveling up through adversity.

No road worth taking is smooth.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I mostly work online with athletes and clients, addressing complex health issues or creating better habits to help them achieve their dream physique. As a figure competitor myself, my passion is to work with bodybuilders and competition prep clients.

I go beyond just the basics of nutrition and training; I analyze lab work and really dig for the root cause of whatever the client is struggling with.

I work with a broad spectrum of clients, from a 60-year-old with terrible gut health who wants to improve her digestion to an aspiring NPC Men’s Classic Physique Competitor.

No matter the person, it starts with understanding where the client is at in their fitness journey and working together to find the root cause of their issue, so we can navigate it as a team.

I’ve helped people lose hundreds of pounds of fat, change their body composition, and create long-lasting habits that last their lifetime.

I continue my education by taking classes, workshops, and working hand in hand with my mentor to ensure my clients get the best possible care and results.

What was you like growing up?
I had a small personality, I hid a lot because of my weight and was bullied for it. I was active in sports and enjoyed being outside, but my comfort zone was staying indoors to play video games and hide behind a screen.

It wasn’t until I was 16 and my weight had ballooned up to 250lbs., that I took an interest in improving my health and taking charge of my life.
