Today we’d like to introduce you to Unicorn Hole.
Hello Unicorn Hole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always loved music. Even at a young age I would sit in front of the stereo and listen to CDs front-to-back while reading the lyric book. I was “in a band” with several friends long before any of us knew anything about music. As a teenager, I picked up the bass and took music classes at school. I also got into heavier, more alternative music. This was largely thanks to MySpace, which allowed any musician to put their music in front of millions of people, arguably for the first time in history. I started Unicorn Hole on that platform in July of 2007, as a ridiculous grindcore project with 100% digital music and harsh vocals. The project repeatedly evolved over the years into what it is now- an amalgamation of all the music I’ve obsessed over throughout my life and the video games that shaped my creativity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The main struggles that face Unicorn Hole are finding an audience and finding the time to be creative. The internet is a blessing and a curse for artists. I can put my music up for anyone in the world to check out; the only issue is that everyone else can do that too. An artist could write the greatest song ever, but it probably won’t be noticed when thousands of other songs were also posted that day. It’s a constant struggle to grab any attention you can as an artist in the digital age. And then there’s time- my lifelong enemy. As a kid, I was never ready to go to bed yet when it was time to, and as an adult, I pretty much feel the same way. I bet if I could spend a year in frozen time, free to create all I wanted, at the end of it I would feel like I hadn’t even really started yet.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Unicorn Hole primarily blends metalcore (a combination of metal and hardcore punk) with retro video game sounds and vibes. My music is exciting, nostalgic, and often abrasive while exploring a wide range of different emotions and subgenres. My recent single “Static Snow” reflects on growing older while desperately holding onto cherished childhood memories, and it touches on the comforts and detriments therein. Meanwhile, “FROGGY CHAIR” is an entire EP simply written about a cute piece of furniture from the Animal Crossing series. Much of my music pays homage to the video games that I hold dear- by the way they sound, by their lyrical content, or both.
Then there’s perhaps Uhole’s most ambitious endeavor, the NCU, which is a massive fantasy story told over the course of several albums by multiple bands. I dreamt up the project, and oversee everything to keep the story and setting consistent, even as several artists contribute to the lore. The NCU will even be expanding into animated lyric videos soon, and a pretty big merch rollout is in the works as well. I have also performed live several times, including at BitGen, which is an annual festival that celebrates gaming and music. When I play a live show, I recruit musician friends of mine to help out, to make the show more dynamic and exciting. The common link between everything Uhole does is a deeply rooted passion for the music and video games I grew up with.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
If a musician or other artist is interested in collaborating with me, they should just shoot me a message on any of my socials. I’ve worked with dozens and dozens of other artists on all kinds of unique projects- from cowriting music to producing animations, to programming video games. A great way to support me would be to simply help spread the word. Someone showing my work to someone else who might click with it means the world to me. The best way to support me directly is to subscribe to my Patreon, where I offer exclusive music, update videos, and other content. Also, buying music on my BandCamp (though it can all be downloaded for free if you’d rather), or nabbing some merch from my BigCartel always helps as well!
