Meet Laura Gutowski of Everything In Its Space

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Gutowski.

Hi Laura, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I found organizing very early on in life. Let’s just say my mother isn’t the most organized of people (hopefully she doesn’t read this article!), so I had to figure out how to create organizational systems that would work for us. By the age of ten, I was already helping friends and family to organize too. Birthday presents and gifts for the holidays – by popular demand – often consisted of free vouchers to help declutter closets, organize photos or arrange home offices.

Since then, I have lived and worked all around the world. From tiny apartments in Hong Kong to flats in London with no closets (just wardrobes!) to homes across America, I have helped people organize and make their spaces welcoming and beautiful. I had been organizing on the side for many years, but in 2019 decided to take the plunge, form Everything In Its Space, and become a full-time professional organizer. And I love it! It is hugely satisfying and rewarding to see how transforming and empowering this experience can be for my clients.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish! At the start of the pandemic, I was living in London, where a full lockdown was enforced. I couldn’t go to my clients’ homes to help them organize, so I went from being super busy to having zero income almost overnight. Luckily, I was a member of industry associations like APDO and NAPO and could use their forums to talk to other professional organizers and see what they were doing; that opened the door to virtual organizing for me, which for many months was all that I was able to offer. I’m glad that I was able to at least provide that support to my clients during the worst of the pandemic, but am very glad that we’re back to hands-on, in-person sessions now!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Everything In Its Space?
Life can be chaotic! We’ve all felt overwhelmed by the competing priorities of work, family, and relationships. No wonder that we often struggle to declutter our homes. At the end of busy weeks and weekends, actually organizing your closet and bringing those bags of clothes to be donated can feel daunting.

I strongly believe that your home should not be yet another thing that overwhelms you! Instead, it should be a respite from the daily stresses and demands of life. To make sure your home is all that and more, I offer advice, encouragement, and guidance through the process of decluttering and organizing your space in a way that works best for you and can be easily maintained and enjoyed. You will feel like you have more time and more control! You may even re-discover things you love! And nothing makes me happier than seeing that weight lifted off the shoulders of my clients!

Each experience with Everything In Its Space is different, tailored especially for you and your home organization needs. But whether you’re looking to organize your closet, kitchen, office, or the whole home, I can definitely help!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
On calm days my sister and I would take a raft out into the ocean, lay on our stomachs with our heads over the edge, and peer down on a hunt for sand dollars. When we finally spotted one, we would dive down and grab it, bring it home, and give it to our mom. She would elaborately roam around the house to find the ‘perfect’ spot to display it, with my sister and I following closely behind. When she found the right spot, she would make a huge deal about how this was the best one yet, and my sister and I would burst with pride!
