Meet Chris Harvin of MOR Events & Entertainment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Harvin.

Hi Chris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Much of my previous work experience involved managing customer service teams as well as building facilities management. From there I learned how to use my power to connect with members of multiple teams for the sake of a unified goal. Though I learned a lot and made strides up the corporate ladder, my overall satisfaction with the industry was less than fulfilling. In 2011, following a company-wide layoff, I decided to seek creative opportunities and stumbled upon a local ad looking for individuals to host trivia a few nights a week. Taking a leap, I pursued the opportunity and was amazed by all of the skills I began to uncover, not to mention the overwhelming satisfaction I got from putting smiles on faces for a living. From there I began investing in the foundation for my company’s entertainment services to support local businesses of all sizes.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
You mean aside from the most significant challenge of surviving a global pandemic shutdown back in 2020? Experiencing a global shutdown was by far the biggest challenge we faced and are still recovering from. I will say the shutdown in 2020 presented the challenge of getting creative with our service offerings which ultimately introduced our customers to virtual events. We began offering a 100% free virtual experience of music bingo which attracted visitors from all over the globe, many of which hired us to provide private virtual events to their families, coworkers, and nonprofits. We would continue this offering for more than 1 year following world reopening. On another note, similar to many startups we too have experienced a healthy blend of rewards and challenges along the way. Relatively low barriers of entry to offer one event hosted by one individual can yield immediate profit. Soon this presents the challenge of scalability. The reality that one person can only be in one place at a time presents the challenge of staffing other talented individuals to entertain customers on a consistent basis given the perceived limitations of a part-time side gig. We have been fortunate to grow a team of multi-talented entertainers and look to attract many more.

We’ve been impressed with MOR Events & Entertainment, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Whether it be music bingo for your bar/restaurant, trivia for your country club’s family night, or a live DJ and host to set the mood right, MOR has you covered to create memories on repeat. MOR Events and Entertainment is more than just a host or a DJ… it is the ultimate experience. Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
While risk-taking can be super scary, my opinion is that it is necessary to achieve success as an entrepreneur. Turning your “what ifs” into well-thought-out experiments is often the only way to move your business forward. Think of it as a calculated risk where you recognize the potential rewards, for example scaling your business to the next level, in spite of the potential risk of jeopardizing quality. MOR Events took a risk by expanding from Charlotte, NC into the Charleston area in 2021. We realized operating a sector of business long distance came with certain implications of risk such as the potential for losing the personal connection we form with our clients. Other risks include staffing in unfamiliar territory and competing with local competitors. With confidence in our bandwidth and a trusted team member on the ground in Charleston, we planned our approach and took a leap of faith. Here we are one year later still growing steadily throughout the Charleston area. Reality is that we all take risks every day and so we benefit from a growing comfort with being uncomfortable as it relates to taking risks. While some will question what if it doesn’t work? Listen to the voice that says- what if it does?
