Today we’d like to introduce you to Genise Scott.
Hi Genise, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Genise. Mom. Wife. Cybersecurity Professional. Veteran. Entrepreneur. Sister. Friend and hopeful inspiration to others. The list can continue but for the sake of argument, I am the owner of a growing brand called OTG Athleisure. It is a Luxury Athleisure Brand Founded in 2020. OTG stands for ON THE GO & ON THE GRIND. It is designed for women on the go with a desire for comfort, impeccable style, and an unstoppable schedule. A woman that is on her grind makes things happen and she is nothing short of amazing.
OTG was started as a way motivate women to crush their goals, look good, and feel confident while doing it. OTG is also a lifestyle brand. Personally, I wear athleisure 92% of the time and I really think that there is power in looking cute while being comfy but not breaking the bank.
Though the vision for OTG goes beyond any pair of leggings I could ever wear. I have a desire to build friendship and community amongst women striving to be their best self. Natural born cheerleader, If I see someone doing great things on my social media timeline, I do my best to cheer them on, be supportive especially if it is in the gym so I would love to be able build on that. I know going to the gym is not always easy or desirable so I try to do my part to encourage others that it can be both fun and rewarding.
In the future, I would love for OTG to provide avenues of mentorship in smaller underrepresented communities. The goal would be to teach life skills, entrepreneurship, and the foundations of living a healthy and balanced lifestyle. So far, I am making good on that promise by giving opportunities to a group of teens with a non profit called Beyond the Walls. My goal is to teach them anything they want to know about my business. These youth were able to help me with my 1 year anniversary which was a really big event. Through the partnership with Beyond the walls, I serve as a mentor and intend to have outings in the future where we really engage their interests.
I grew up in a very small town so I really understand the power of representation and mentorship.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, the biggest challenge has been not being fully size-inclusive. Sometimes when building a brand from the ground up, all sizes are not as accessible for me like they are for bigger brands. Sometimes the time I spend on working on that aspect of business is not easily seen.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Professionally, I am a Cybersecurity professional. I also served in the South Carolina Air National Guard for 12 years. Last year in 2021 I ended my commitment and started my athleisure brand. This brand means so much to me and the community that I desire to serve. Becoming a business owner was never the path I thought I would design for myself. I was and still am extremely content with my “day job” but I know that my purpose is to serve. Though I’m no longer in the military, I still value the opportunity to be able to serve others and now I can do that on my own terms through my business. We celebrated being one year in business in such an amazing way dedicated to community, uplift and Mentorship on March 5. We partnered with Slutty Vegan ATL to assist with bringing awareness to my brand. The business is not just here to “be in business” it is here to spread love, positivity, and build confidence in women in their everyday walks of life. I’m also big on mentorship. It is important for my business to be successful so that I may inspire a dreamer that you can be anything you want to be. Now that I have experienced college, the military, corporate America and now entrepreneurship, I know that I have what it takes to inspire youth that may not have someone to look up to.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I have been a cheerleader for my local high school from age 4 until I graduated, minus a few years in middle school. When I wasn’t cheering, I was playing basketball, and sometimes I would do both at the same time. Since I have been cheering since I could remember, I know that so many aspect of being a cheerleader has shaped my life and character. To me, cheerleading has always been a sport 🙂 so we can say that I’ve always been active. Looking back cheerleading is responsible for building and developing my confidence to get in front a room full of people and perform at by best. It is responsible for the encouragement that I love to give others because there is something exciting about being 20 points down and still rooting for your team to win. Being cheer captain for several years, cheerleading is the reason I want to make sure that all women feel as confident when they step in a room full of people. Thankful for this interview as it has been a gentle reminder to continue to be the biggest cheerleader, especially for myself.
