Today we’d like to introduce you to Kilo Kitty Buhrmaster.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Kilo Kitty Buhrmaster persona was born in 2011. I began my fitness journey in pole and haven’t looked back. I began pole classes in Jax’s apartment (The Pole Academy) until the studio’s location opened (2014). When the current location opened, I began teaching pole and non-pole classes at The Pole Academy (up till February 2022) after earning my pole instructor certification. After earning my certification, I began teaching classes as well as feeling the urge to compete. In 2013, just when I finally built up the nerve to compete then bam! I end up breaking my left fibula (non-pole related) and had to have surgery. They had to place a metal plate and several screws including 1 through my ankle. Due to the injury, my competition bug had to be contained until 2017. I began performing and competing in pole as much as possible. From 2017 to 2021 I have performed over 20 times and competed over 13 times.
During my time, I really found myself through fitness and started cross-training and dabbled into many more forms of fitness such as Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, Pilates, Yoga, TRX, Zumba, HIIT but fell in love with Calisthenics (which pole falls into). I began studying as much as I could and earning my other certifications that contribute to the pole industry but I was craving more. In the beginning of 2022, I began working on Group Fitness Instructor certification through ACE as well Personal Trainer certification through ACTION-CPT which will be applied to my non-pole fitness programs and businesses that I use under the Kilo’s Killer Training monicker on Instagram.
In very late 2020, I began working on a side project of creating bath bombs and self-care aides that aims towards the pole community to help with recovery. I call that project Kilo’s Balls and Biscuits on Instagram.
At the beginning of this year, I became a Glendi Guide Dance Cardio Instructor, Stretch, and Olympian HIIT Instructor under my monicker Fitness Instructor Marsha on Instagram.
I love projects and challenges.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is ever truly smooth unless freshly paven. I have had many bumps and potholes along my way. My injury took me off my fitness journey for 4 months. I had to learn how to walk again, in a manner of speaking. Trying to pole with a cast and walking boot was quite a challenge. I don’t recommend it. However, it did help increase my upper body strength! So, having to retrain everything and rebuild all my strength and flexibility, took some time. Now, without sounding too biased, I feel like the history of pole causes people to focus more on the stereotypes. Which causes them to develop a negative opinion without giving me or pole fitness a chance. I am a strong believer of don’t knock it till you try it. You never know if you truly like it, maybe even have a natural gift for it.
With that and any small businesses trying to grow, it takes time. I have been trying to grow my brand by word of mouth and I learned through observation that usually once a small business hits 5 years that they would be around for a while. However, 2020 threw a wrench in everyone’s plans and now the world and society had to adapt and change with the time. I make the joke that we don’t talk about 2020. There is no way to really explain 2020 and the cause and effect it has had on all of us.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I joke that I am a jack of all trades kind of person. My main passion is pole and that is my heart and soul. I love performing, competing and teaching, I love helping others grow during their fitness journey (even if it isn’t pole). I want others to feel achieved no matter what you decide! If it’s getting out of bed and even coming to a class despite the urge not to! That is a huge achievement especially now more than ever. I am a huge advocate of fitness; I feel that fitness is a solution to a lot of mental and physical blocks; as well as the emotional and spiritual release that may occur. Since I began competing in pole, I have placed 9 out of 13 competitions, and for someone who came from a background of nothing to where I am now; that is quite a huge accomplishment in the 5 years. I always tell my students that competing is for anyone. I have congenital nystagmus (dancing eyes) that restricts my vision so seeing the judges and audience makes it very difficult and having the metal ankle makes me cautious of impact movement. It doesn’t stop me from doing crazy tricks, flips, and tumbles on and off the pole! I am known for my tricks and humor in the pole community and definitely my humor outside of pole, I have no problem laughing at myself. I adore my puns and dad jokes and my interesting explanations of executions of movements (pole and non-pole). I mean don’t you want to learn, workout, and enjoy a good laugh or two! Besides, laughing helps with breathing, helps relaxes your muscles, and therefore helps prevent injury. It’s a win-win situation!
What do you think about luck?
“I say luck is when an opportunity comes along and you’re prepared for it.”-Denzel Washington I try not to think about luck, I think everything happens for a reason. I may not know why at the time but it always work out one way or another. It may be good and bad but both create balance for life and business.
