Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Hanes.
Hi Cody, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I graduated from Art School with a Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to do with my career/livelihood. After moving to Myrtle Beach, I took a job caricaturing (drawing funny pictures of people), at first as a side job. After doing it for a while I realized the potential it had to be a lot of fun! I found that the longer I stuck to it and the more I learned, the more fun I had! Now I primarily do events in the Charlotte, North Carolina area.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There was an initial hump to get over in the beginning of my journey into self-employment. I would say that the greatest struggle was my own mind and limiting beliefs. Firstly, I did not believe that I was capable of working for myself, once I overcame that belief, I found that it was much easier than I had thought! Secondly, once I had started, I did not believe that my work was good enough to charge higher prices, as soon as I realized that it was; it was, and I was able to start charging enough to turn my secondary income into my full-time job!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work in caricatures. What sets me apart is that I service mostly events, and when I am at an event, I give it my all. My main focus is always giving my best to all of the events that I am a part of and helping people enjoy themselves. I love to make them amazing portraits they can take home too.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Self-confidence without a doubt. I’ve had to give up the idea of relying on others and trust myself.
