Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayden Cobb.
Hi Ayden, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We were heading to Greenwood, SC to my grandfather’s retirement party, and my whole family had gifts for him except me. So, I was thinking “How could I get some money for a gift?” For years, we visited Soda City Market, almost every Saturday, to get food and all this amazing stuff! Every time we went there, I saw buskers singing or doing something to make money so that gave me the idea that I could go to Soda City to earn some money by dancing! So, I asked my dad if that was OK, and he said, “Sure! Why not?!?” So, we went.
Well, I had a little lunch box for snacks because it’s kind of a long ride to Greenwood, so I emptied it out and opened it up. I was nervous at first. When I started dancing, the only dance I did was “The floss,” and I’m happy to say that I did make some money to give to my grandfather! The first time I danced, I was only out there for 20min. Every time I would dance, I would get a little bit more confident. I would try something new, but I would always go out there to make people happy!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I faced rainstorms!!! I would also have plays or martial arts events that got in the way. People have said some really mean things to me about my dancing. I ignore that because we don’t know what has been going on in their life, what they have gone through, or what family they have lost. COVID put a big damper on the market, but when it opened up, it was a great day. As the market became more popular, I had spots that I like to go to, and sometimes they were taken!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I dance, act in theater and have been in a short film, and love singing. I’m most proud of my ability to perform. What sets me apart is that I practice almost every day to get better. I also love to engage the crowd and put on a show. I love making people happy!
