Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Ebenhoeh.
Hi Brad, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up as a small-town kid in Michigan with limited world experience, but with a ton of ambitions and curiosities. Much of my experience in the corporate accounting world stemmed from thinking I’m smarter or as smart as, and more driven than my bosses and the partners of the firm. From this thinking and drive, my entrepreneur spirit was born. I was an accountant, so how could that be made fun? Once we moved down south to Charleston, that is when we were able to identify a way to make it fun. The premise was simple: create a modern accounting firm that employs the coolest accountants and has the most creative clients. From this, Accountfully was born nearly 10 years ago (January 2012). From the initial launch of the company with my wife and business partner, Meredith, we expanded our firm to employing over 50 people while maintaining our headquarters in the best city in the US; Charleston, SC.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely was not a smooth road. Some of the initial struggles were related to owning a tiny startup with your spouse. This was made extremely tough as we thought we both had to be in every meeting, make dual decisions, etc. In reality, though, the best solution for that is to be heads of different functions, departments, clients, etc., which is exactly what we do now.
The other struggles relate mainly to one of our company’s most finite resources; talent and people. Plugging into the right talent at the right time has always been a struggle, but we feel like we’re getting much better at that. We now try to be as proactive as possible on that front.
As you know, we’re big fans of Accountfully. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Accountfully is a modern, outsourced accounting firm that employs over 50 people and has hundreds of clients across the nation. Our core service is being the accounting department for small businesses in the 0-$5M per year revenue range. Think bookkeeping, controller, and CFO. The majority of our clients are inventory-based businesses, including many of the progressive food and drink brands you see today.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Regarding networking: remember that the person across from you at some point was shy, embarrassed, had anxiety, etc. when showing up at a networking event and didn’t want to talk to anyone. Don’t be intimidated when meeting people.
