Today we’d like to introduce you to Mohan Kumar.
Mohan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We opened our first store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2013. We were founded by myself, my wife (Holiday), and Chef Sam Mason. Sam and I were friends since his days as the pastry chef at wd-50. I used to DJ at night at the bar next door to the restaurant so we become close. When Holiday was pregnant, he brought over pretzel ice cream (he made) and that was when Holiday told me to open an ice cream shop with Sam. Here we are! Over 600 flavors later…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For sure not a smooth road. I didn’t expect the difficulty it is to open and run a small hospitality-focused business. I thought it might be five days a week, but it quickly turned to 7 days a week, 24/7. Since then, and as we’ve grown, I’ve focused on building a solid team.
The worst has been COVID and the impact it’s had on small business and especially in NYC
We’ve been impressed with OddFellows Ice Cream Co., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a craft ice cream company based in Brooklyn. We’re known as the most creative ice cream company in the country. We’ve been praised by Stephen Colbert (” a sucker punch to your tastebuds, fantastic”), The New York Times, Vogue Magazine, and many more. We provide a unique venue to come in and enjoy ice cream. Something for everyone. We have unique takes on classics, and some truly off-the-wall flavors nobody has tasted before… We’ve made more than 600 flavors since 2013.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
We are thankful to all our guests. People love ice cream and you have to sell a bunch of scoops in order to keep doing it for this long. Aside from that, our scoopers. WE have a truly diverse team that shows the melting pot of New York City. That’s who we are.
