Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Foster.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up in a rural small SC town and being raised by a single parent, I always knew that I wanted to do hair! As a senior in high school, I also attended a local beauty college in the evenings and became a licensed cosmetologist at 17 years old.
Being a naturally driven person, I opened my first salon at 18 and after working a couple of years behind the chair, I was hired as an educator for Rusk Products. I was educated nationally doing different trade shows, events, and in-salon classes from 2000-2013. Educating for Rusk allowed me to constantly be around some of the most influential industry leaders.
From 2005-2012, I regularly attended New York Fashion Week as a key stylist for many different fashion brands. I often worked with celebrities and ended up working behind the scenes on a couple of different TV shows. Around 2009, I moved back to South Carolina and chose Greenville, specifically, where I started working at the downtown salon.
I quickly fell in love with the city and knew that I wanted to plant some roots here. After a few years, I opened my very own salon here. I currently work there and offer personalized education plans for professionals in the industry.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say that it has been totally smooth, but building your brand in a service-provided industry takes time, and with that comes its challenges. There are always growing pains to any career where you provide a service. You have to practice, grow your craft, gain clientele, and never get complacent.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Mainly in the salon, I specialize in customized cut and color for clients and customized education for salon professionals. I’m known for creating effortless looks that accentuate a client’s best features.
I’m most proud of all of the experiences that I’ve had that have shaped me into the person that I am today.
My ability to customize a look for a client based on their hair type and lifestyle sets me apart from most stylists. It’s more than recreating an image they show me, it’s me using that image as inspiration to create their best self.
