Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Mannino.
Hi Michael , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I didn’t take the traditional path. I went to college in Colorado Springs, but quickly realized the education system just wasn’t built for someone like me. I’m a doer, not someone who thrives sitting in a classroom being told what to do.
So I left and went back to Michigan, where I got into construction. From day one, I loved it. Working with my hands, building things, seeing real results. Within a few years, I moved from basic construction into higher-end work, choosing to work on custom homes instead of repetitive production builds.
About four years in, I started my own business. From there, it evolved naturally. Finish carpentry to full construction, then renovations, flipping homes, and eventually into multifamily investing.
Over time, that experience led to building companies like American Craftsmen Homes and Ark Investment Ventures. It’s been a steady progression built on doing the work, learning fast, and sticking with what I love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been perfectly smooth, but I’ve always operated in a way that kept me out of major trouble. I never overextended myself financially, and that made a big difference, especially during the 2008 financial crisis.
The biggest lesson is that problems always come, but they also bring opportunity. The key is being in a position to act when those moments show up.
That mindset is also what led to creating Ark Investment Ventures—to help others navigate both opportunities and downturns the right way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At American Craftsmen Homes, we specialize in custom single-family homes, typically ranging from 3,000 to 30,000 square feet. We focus on high-quality builds, whether it’s a luxury custom home or a complex renovation.
What really sets us apart is attention to detail. I personally notice things most people don’t—and I make sure they’re corrected immediately. That level of oversight is what consistently produces high-quality results.
We’ve worked on multi-million-dollar homes, completed large-scale renovations, and even built a home in just six days with hundreds of volunteers as part of a community initiative. Through that effort, we helped renovate entire blocks in Detroit and built homes for families in need.
We’ve also received industry recognition, including earning second place in a Detroit Home Magazine competition for staircase design—one of the most competitive categories—despite entering at the last minute. That speaks to the level of craftsmanship we bring to every project.
At the end of the day, the best measure of our work is the client’s reaction. One of the most meaningful moments for me was finishing a major home project and simply hearing the homeowner say, “Perfect.” That’s the standard we aim for.
We’re also very aware of the issues in the industry right now—there are a lot of people delivering poor quality work. A big part of our mission is to bring reliability, integrity, and craftsmanship back into the building process.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like most about Chapin, South Carolina is simple: my grandson is here. That alone makes it special.
Beyond that, the people are some of the kindest and most genuine I’ve ever met. There’s a strong sense of community, and that’s hard to find.
As for what I like least, honestly, I haven’t found much yet. If I had to pick something, it would be the lack of a great Greek restaurant.
